Greensburg is an agricultural and Manufacturing town located on the Ohio River near Wheeling, WV and Blacksburg, VA. The first people to settle in what is now Greensburg were Germans who came overland from Germany in 1814. They established a farmstead known as "Kellerhof" on the present site of downtown Greensburg. German miners began coming to the area during the late 1800s, starting to prospect for coal under what is now called "Old Mill Road". By 1899, there were over 100 businesses operating in downtown Greensburg with a total payroll of $1 million. Counties around Mingo County soon followed suit with their own small towns establishing themselves within reach of Greensburg: Carbon (1899), Monongalia (1901), Mercer (1910), Fayette (1914) and Harrison (1920). In 1907, George Washington High School was built on land donated by local farmer Lafayette Dixon to serve as a public school for students from rural Mingo County. The school became one of the leading high schools in Appalachia; it still operates today as part of West Virginia University System serving students from all nine counties surrounding Mingo County including GreenSBurg andWheeling which are also former parts of Mingo County. In 1935-36 when West Virginia Statehood was being considered by Congress, GreeneSBurg voted against statehood because they felt that it would not benefit them economically or politically speaking since they already had a government that catered to their needs – this sentiment continues into current day with many residents feeling that they are second class citizens due to lack of representation in government services while nearby Wheeling benefits greatly from its status as an economic powerhouse thanks largely to Interstate 77 traffic congestion caused by those same transportation limitations.). Greensburg is a city in and the county seat of Perry County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 37,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The town was founded by George Washington and named for his sister-in-law Rachel Green (1760–1836). The first white settler in Greensburg was James Crouse (1795–1868), who bought 7 acres (2 km²) of land from Capt. John Forbes in 1824. He also erected a small log cabin on the site where present day Green Street meets Wyoming Avenue. In 1827, David Muhlenberg donated 640 acres (248 ha) to the Township of Perryville for use as a rural township school district with five schools: one for boys and four girls; one farm house; and three church houses. In 1851, the Township of Perryville disbanded when it merged into Greene Township which became Perry County in 1889. Between 1850 and 1860, much of what is now Greensburg were laid out according to this plan including two brick churches – First Presbyterian Church built in 1850 and Second Presbyterian Church built in 1861 – both now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Greensburg developed slowly until about 1920 when World War I spurred economic development through new manufacturing jobs in munitions plants throughout central Pennsylvania aided by federal subsidies given to local governments that needed patriotic stimulus during wartime times. In 1935, Greenwood Elementary School opened as part of a larger school system expansion program financed by state appropriations which added over 100 students across eight grades from pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade to help meet growing needs within the community after years when only six grade levels were offered at primary schools statewide due to low enrollment rates caused by high tuition rates at commonwealth colleges during those years while there were no secondary or postsecondary institutions located within an hour's drive outside Philadelphia or Harrisburg as compared toPhiladelphia being home to more than fifteen thousand students attending college while Harrisburg had over twenty thousand students enrolled at its universities alone .
