Greensburg is a city in and the county seat of Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 25,055 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The name "Greensburg" originally referred to a tract of land in what is now Butler County that had been granted by James K. Polk to Andrew Jackson for his service as U.S. president during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). The first known permanent settler in Greensburg was Levi Coffin, who arrived in 1792 from Bucks County, Pennsylvania with his family and started a gristmill on the Susquehanna River near present-day Greensburg. In 1814, John Penn settled on a farm east of town and named it Penn's Landing after himself and George Washington Penn (1749–1828), brother of James K. Polk's predecessor as President of the United States (1845-51). From this location, Penn sent delegates to create what would become Erie Canal Company in 1825; he also contributed $5,000 towards its construction. In 1829–30, John Dickinson Thacher built an iron furnace at what is now downtown Greensburg; it became one of the leading manufacturers of pig iron in America during this time period. In 1840–41, David Starr Jordan founded The Philadelphia Journal here as one of the first papers printed continuously using technology then available; he also published The Saturday Evening Post from here beginning November 1st 1850 until its sale to Edwin Hirschmann in 1865. In 1847–48 – following enactment by Congress of an act providing for Reconstruction following the American Civil War – Greenough Township was organized from parts of Butler and Fayette counties into which Greensburg had been annexed earlier that year; this event marked an important change for Greensburg because prior to incorporation it functioned primarily as a farming community with few Unincorporated areas dotted around its outskirts like today's neighborhoods do within municipalities boundaries It wasn't until 1861 when oil production began occurring at Hazelwood Field west of town – eventually resulting in more than 2 million barrels being produced annually at this site – that commercial development truly began taking hold within Greensburg limits; over ensuing years many high-profile companies such as DuPont & Co., Citizens Nickel Works and Bethlehem Steel Corporation were founded or expanded their operations within our city limits During World War II much activity took place within Girdwood Naval Air Station located just southwest/northwestof town - serving both Allied forces fighting RAF Bomber Command activities over Germany during 1944-1945 as well as USAF Coastal Wings conducting raids against Japanese targets some 50 miles away across Northumberland Strait - making greensburger home soil for millions upon millions military personnel who conducted warfare all throughout Eurasia .Postwar growth has again resumed with major investments made by local businesses into new housing developments such as Heinz Plaza / Point Breeze Villages adjacent Interstate 376 eastbound exit #2 off Ionia Avenue just south/southeastof town while new sections have also been developed adjacent Third Street Extension along Ionia Avenue between Westmoreland Avenue and Mellon Drive - creating yet another layer(s) Today Keystone Light & Power Company forms an integral component(s)of Carnegie Steel Industries Incorporated whose principal facility(es) are located inside McKeesport Borough limits just northwest/southwestoftown beside PA Turnpike exit #236A off Ionia Avenue - providing residents access directlyto global resources essential to lifeblood industries worldwide includingsteel ,coal etc ..significant development projects ongoing such as Gateway Center Mall redevelopment project utilizing surrounding brownfield sites neighboring Summit Middle School continuing through 2020 .. additional retail plaza developments havingopened nearby including York Mills Mall adjacent Springboro Road immediately north Of Gateway Center mall .... numerous restaurants are open 24 hours A DAY serving up everythingfrom fast food chains cateringto fine dining establishments .... significant job growth has occurred recently with people increasingly dispersing into suburbs outside Harrisburgh proper ...........overwhelmingly positive responsesTOWARDS GREENSBURG ...a place where diversity abounds ...a community dedicatedto quality public education ......."
