The first store opened here on December 12th 1802 by Reverend Alexander Campbell who owned a farm west of town along High Street (). This store became known as "the Campbell Store". The present day Market Square occupies part of this site where Reverend Campbell had laid out Market Alley back when shopping areas were more important than today's commercial corridors! The Delaware & Western Railroad reached Greensburg in 1868 and developed it into one of their main stops on their route from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh via Greensburg and Monroeville (). By 1888 there were over 100 businesses located here including ten banks (), twenty-four stores (), two breweries ()and four hotels (). A large foundry ()in addition to several tanneries (); an insurance company (); three general stores; six harness shops; eleven brewers; four blacksmiths; six tailors; five manufacturers (); two cigar factories (); three wagonmakers.; two saddlers'; one hatcher(); one retailer ;one doctor;; four teachers ;one clergyman;; eight hotelkeepers . During World War II local production helped contribute greatly to the war effort with many locals working at various munitions plants or metalworking facilities such as Potters Forge Workshops Ltd., Scranton Workshops Ltd., Bethlehem Steel Workshops Ltd., Erie Lackawanna Iron & Coal Company’s Foundry #1 (now known as Centennial Chemical Corporation), PNE Glassworks Incorporated (), PSE Aircraft Corp., Bethlehem Steel Corporation’s Wiremill #1 (now known as Armstrong Paper Mill), Scranton Machine Shop Incorporated (), Bethlehem Steel Corporation’s Foundry #2 (known then as Armour Electric Factory), Shoe Mills Incorporated (), Moynihan Rubber Company
