Greensburg is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Greensburg was founded in 1795 as a small village on the Allegheny River by English colonists who named it Greenville after their home county of Wiltshire. In 1801, Greensburg became a borough and in 1853 it became an incorporated city. In 1955, it merged with nearby Monroeville to form the current city of Greensburg-Monroeville. The name "Greensburg" comes from two sources: one from early days when settlers were trading goods with Indians and bringing plants back with them (the meaning of "green valley"), and another derived from George Washington's birthplaceplace called Mount Vernon (now Arlington Heights). The first settler arrived in 1795, when Colonel George Washington led an expedition upriver to survey land for his estate near what is now Greenville Township. He named the community Greenville after his home county of Wiltshire – then part of England but now part of Wales – and also named his plantation Monticello after his Virginia plantation where he lived during most of his lifetime. The township was organized on February 14, 1800 under the leadership of John Prentice who had come overland from Lancaster County with supplies to help establish the new township; heading a march that day through some high mountains eastward across what are today Northumberland and Butler counties towards present-day Greensburg proper. On reaching its limits within present-day Greenville Township, Prentice turned southward along US 21 toward Monroeville before turning northwest again along PA 128/US 22 towards Greensburg proper; this route bisectingpresentdayGreenvilleTownshipalong its length about five miles west-southwest from its original point. Greensburg was founded in 1795 by the Potts family. The house on Broad Street that is now the museum was built in 1802 by James and Ann Potts. The Potts brothers, John and William, who operated a tannery on the east side of town, donated land for a public square in 1812. In 1830, Greenburg became part of Indiana Territory. In 1838, it was organized as a township within Columbiana County. On November 3,1848, Greenburg became independent from Columbiana County and adopted its current name. The first store in Greenburgh opened in 1814 and was run by Mr. Potter himself. A post office was established at Greenburgh in 1815 and continued operation until 1840. The first school at Greenburgh was taught by Miss Browning until after the American Civil War when Mrs. Hildebrandt took over instruction for her children. After the war, Mrs. Hildebrandt served as president of the school board until her death in 1865; she had four daughters who taught there during their mother's lifetime including Ada Mears (1901-1978), Oveta Landon (1910-2006), Jane Addams (1913-2002) and Bella Doddridge (1920-2013). In 1862, Mr., DeWitt Clinton moved to Greensburg from Lebanon county with his wife Julia to take up farming after being widowed twice before; they also started a grocery business that prospered for many years before he died in 1916 at age 80 years old local history paper articles about Greensburg
