The decline of textile production during the late 19th century led to gloomier times for Greensburg until economic development revived in the early 20th century under leadership of Mayor John Prentice and Town Councilman Harry Weingarten. During World War II, Greensburg played an important role as part of Operation Overlord by providing materials to Allied forces engaged in hostilities overseas. After World War II ended, growth picked up again as new industries such as textiles replaced traditional agriculture in Greenburgh's economy. However, during recent years there has been stagnation or even decline in many aspects of basic factory workforces throughout much of Greater Philadelphia due to technological advances which have made it difficult for workers to keep pace with increasing competition from abroad and other sources; however some small businesses are still thriving thanks to innovative marketing approaches like e-commerce
The area now known as Greensburg, Pennsylvania was first settled by Europeans in the early 17th century. In 1681, the Susquehanna River was crossed by a group of Dutch settlers and their Indian allies during the Beaver War. The river became a key trade route for the region and helped to spur settlement in what is now eastern Pennsylvania. By 1800, Greensburg had become an important center for business and industry in southeastern Pennsylvania. In 1814, after years of campaigning by Congressman James K. Polk, Congress passed the Second Treaty of Paris ending the Mexican-American War. This treaty ceded much of California to America and established Ulysses S. Grant as president of Mexico. As part of this treaty, President Grant allowed American Indians to settle on lands east of the Cumberland Mountains in what is now eastern Tennessee and western Kentucky. The town called Greenburgh was founded near where today’s Greensburg stands on land granted to European settlers by President Grant at that time. Many factors contributed to commercial success during the early decades of Philadelphia’s growth as a commercial center such as canal constructions and easy access to riverside markets through Huntingdon Valley and other valleys within central Pennsylvania (modern-day Delaware County). However, with increasedrailroad construction throughout northeastern Pennsylvania during the late 19th century – most notably along Route 11 – critical mass necessary for sustained economic growth occurred over a period extending from1880 until 1930
