Greensburg is a city in and the county seat of Hancock County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 27,059 at the 2010 census. Greensburg is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The community started as a small settlement on Beaver Creek in 1788 by five men led by James Green. By 1800, the town had grown to include 200 homes and 10 businesses. A post office was established in 1807, and sales tax revenue from operations supported public schools until 1893 when statehood provided more funding for school district needs. In 1865, Greensburg became a borough; it remained an independent municipality until 1975. In 1837, land grants were given to John Dickson and others in what would later become Hancock County for the purpose of creating a township or "borough". The first meeting of the Township Committee was held on March 12th of that year with George Julius as President & David Rankin Secretary/Treasurer On November 3rd same year groundbreaking occurred for what would eventually be known as “Greensburg” village although many thought it was called “Greensburgh” due to its location adjacent to Beaver Creek which caused some confusion at that time. On December 15th 1837 issue of the Pennsylvania Gazette announced that: "It has been discovered by surveyors that certain parts of this township do not form an integral part thereof... Accordingly...on motion made by David Rankin treasurer we adjourned said committee until tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock A.M." It wasn't until January 1st 1840 when minutes show both houses passed Resolution #2 approving platting out lot numbers one through ten on South Main Street incorporating Greenburgh Village according to platting done there earlier that same day! On February 25th 1840 diary entry shows vote being taken on whether or not name change should be proposed for village so I will say yes it did happen thanks to Mr Rankin's persistence! Accordingly on Wednesday evening February 26th 1840 Resolution #4was passed naming new village “Greensburg” after James Green who donated land for it!" When completed $8 per acre was collected from 2 lots initially offered plus 50% municipal services fee which funded streetlights, lights and water line spending during first few years before assessment increased every 5 years thereafter! In 1845 boundary changes resulted in addition of much needed land east of present day 13th Street including now known as North Side (now Mellon Park) making future growth even more difficult! As early as 1830s there were plans to move people out because lack of available land made living here impossible even with help from neighboring townships! After years of hard work by many citizens local officials agreed to annex neighboring townships allowing growth potential within limits!" With such great progress made throughout its history Greensburg has faced some tough times but always manages to overcome them with determinedness!!
