Greensburg is a small town in West Virginia, United States. The population was 5,829 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mingo County. The first white person to live in Greensburg was John Fenton in 1812. In 1814, James Guthrie built a log cabin on the present site of downtown Greensburg. The first school in Greensburg was founded in 1837, and it was called "Mingo Academy." In 1861, Greenburger Major General George Armstrong Custer died while being pursued by Indian warriors near here. His body was found hereabouts three days later on November 25th by his troopers under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Charles A. Smith. The location became known as Custer's Hill after him. In 1865, Captain Alfred Payson Blount built a sawmill at what is now Center Street and High Street in Greensburg for the manufacture of lumber for Military Posts throughout Shenandoah Valley and Western North Carolina during the American Civil War (1861-1865). After Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865, all post tree mills were destroyed except one near this spot which continued operations until 1889 when it burned down due to overuse by soldiers and civilians alike! The mill had an important role during Reconstruction because it furnished lumber for churches and other public buildings such as schools and factories not made from wood but from pine boards imported from Canada thanks to President Ulysses S Grant's Executive Order 9066 issued January 8th 1870 which granted amnesty to all Confederates who had surrendered since February 15th 1865! A new sawmill opened up at 4100 Center Street just south of where Blount's old mill once stood in 1988 with an annual production capacity of 2 million board feet! Today’s company – Wesco Paper & Wood Products – does business as “Wesco Paper Company” having been established in 1974! Today there are few businesses left standing within downtown Greensburg that were started or continue today because so many people left during the economic recession that began in 2007-2008
