Greensburg is a town in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,671 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Greensburg is home to the Armstrong County Courthouse and the William Penn National Historical Park. The first permanent English settlement in what is now Armstrong County was made by John Simcoe on July 26, 1778 when he and his party of soldiers encountered a group of Iroquois Indians near what is now Greenville Township. At first they thought it was an Indian attack but when they saw that there were no weapons among them they realized that this must be a new land acquisition by British Crown Colony; this marked the beginning of civilization on what are today Armstrong and Lawrence Counties. In 1792, George Washington visited Greensburg while campaigning for reelection as President of the United States and spent two days meeting with local farmers and traders before riding back to Philadelphia to take office. One reason why Washington came to Greensburg during this time may have been because he had heard about its rich coal reserves which would later become important in powering American industry during the Revolutionary War. When Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860, many people in Armstrong County were optimistic about his candidacy due to his stances on slavery and Reconstruction following Civil War; however after reading reports from Union troops fighting inside Virginia he decided not to run for office again until after the war had ended. In 1865 riots took place throughout much of America after news arrived of Confederate General Robert Ewell's surrender at Appomattox Court House; Greensburg remained relatively calm despite such high-profile events happening within its community. However, once Army General West Point surrendered at Appomattox Court House all bets were off for Armstrong County as violence quickly ensued between pro-Confederate residents and pro-Unionists over who should get credit for victory (much like today). The largest single group involved in these riots were African Americans who had been forced into labor by their white owners upon emancipation; most notably members of the Knights Templar Order who looted homes and businesses throughout central Pennsylvania during this time period.. The late 1800s also saw a large increase in recreational activity within Greenville Township which eventually led to forest fire restrictions being placed upon it by township officials due to concerns that properties within town might be lost if necessary fires could not be put out quickly enough given how close some townships gotto burn down due to lack thereof fire extinguisher supplies or other means available! On July 20 of that year, when Union troops burned down Harper's Ferry Bridge overthe Susquehanna River as part of an effort to capture operations by Confederate general Jubal Early near Gettysburg Battlefield – one day before Lincoln delivered his Address to Congress commemorating four years of war – many GreensBURGH residents took up arms against the Union army and joinedLee's army as soldiers. The former Harper's Ferry Arsenal now houses Point Breeze Park which includes a Visitors Center with exhibits about local history including battles fought here such as Gettysburg & Yorktown In 1933, Philadelphia-based Standard Oil Company merged with other companies interests including US Steel Corporation forming US Steel Corporation Bethlehem Aircraft Works which employed more than 2200 people at its peak but closed its doors due to World War II shortages of aluminum products In 1969 independent donut shop operator Donuts Unlimited became one of five separate companies incorporated within minutes following deregulation being passed by state legislature; later becoming known as Benjamins Doughnuts Incorporated .
