In 1816, they founded a new settlement called "Greenbrier" on land that later became part of Greensburg Township. In 1824, John Dickinson named his farmstead after George Washington's plantation near Mount Vernon in Virginia. At the time, many Pennsylvania farmers took pleasure in naming their properties after Ulysses S. Grant or other notable Americans. By 1830, most of Greenbrier's residents had moved to larger settlements within Butler and Westmoreland counties because of low prices for land and increasing competition from Ohio Valley settlers. The first post office was established in Greensburg on July 1, 1830; it was renamed "Greensburgh" on December 12, 1842 (the date may have been derived from American Antiquarian Society journal proceedings volume 36 [1846]), with David Hogg as postmaster-general until 1865. When national postal service was inaugurated on October 15th, 1855 by President James K Polk under the act known as "Compulsory Mail Act," Greenburgh became one of its initial recipients due to its proximity to Pittsburgh and its then-richest citizens for mail transportation services at that time – about $4 per week when compared to $0 per week today).
