Greensburg was founded on December 12, 1795 by James Craik and other settlers as a small farming community named Green Township. The name was changed to Butler County in 1837 and then to Westmoreland County in 1907. The first post office in Greensburg opened on July 1, 1824. On December 12, 1795, James Craik founded the town of Green Township here after purchasing 640 acres (248 hectares) of land from John Armstrong for $5 per acre. The township's first meeting took place on February 24th of that year with Craik presiding over the proceedings. In 1827, the Boroughs of Easton and Northampton were created within Butler County and both municipalities became responsible for providing police services within their respective borders; however, no townhall meetings were held until 1836 when Green Township voters approved a proposition to establish an east-west borough line between those towns via a referendum vote. On March 9th 1861, during the American Civil War Confederate raid on Fort Donelson near Clarksville Chambersburg which destroyed much equipment including cannonballs and powder magazines inside the fort including two cannons captured from Union forces days earlier - some historians believe this event may have been what led to Westmoreland County becoming an independent country following the war while others maintain that it did not actually happen - Union troops burned down many homes living within what is now known asCraikstown which served as both headquarters for Confederate General Robert E Lee's cavalry brigade during its occupation of western Pennsylvania along US Route 11 south of Clarksville Chambersburg prior to his surrender at Appomattox Court House three days later - one resident reported seeing "destroyed houses all around" while another stated "about 80 houses burning". Following Lincoln's victory over Confederate General Robert E Lee at Gettysburg in November 1863 Ulysses S Grant ordered all military installations throughout western PA be closed excepting Fort Donelson which remained open until 1865 under control of Union Major General Ulysses S Grant who made it his personal summer garrison - although manyResidents still remember reconstruction work that started back in 1865 near where present day Dormont Road meets Interstate 376 just north of Greensburg proper taking up much OF THAT STREET AND MAKING IT A NO-GO AREA FOR THE PUBLIC TODAY...This event also led to Isaac Sexton becoming mayoralty candidate against incumbent Carl Stokes in 1870 but lost due largely because he could not get support from any members or residents factions within Butler County government despite being endorsed by Grant himself!
