The main street through town today is named for George Washington Harris (1786-1865), who served as Mayor of Greensburg from 1861 to 1865 and as Governor of Pennsylvania from 1867 to 1870. Harris was also a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1829 to 1830 and again from 1835 to 1840 and attorney general for Pennsylvania from 1850 to 1853. On December 15, 1860, during the Civil War, Greensburg sided with Confederate forces against Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant and participated in battle at Monmouth Junction near present-day Greenburgh. The town lost about 60% of its adult male population when most men enlisted or left for duty outside the Union army; only about 30 men remained after war's end to help rebuild postwar society. Of these few residents, many returned home soon after hostilities ended while others found new homes elsewhere within four years following surrendering Greensburg's independence on May 10th 1865 over two days - essentially ending any hope that it might secede again during wartime anarchy that followed peace negotiations three months later In 1933, greensburg had a population increase due to construction of the Erie Canal which connected Erie City in Buffalo New York with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Township along PA Route 22 which led directly into Greensburg thence southward down US 20 until terminating at PA Routes 711 & 824 just north ofpresent day Greenburgh limits As early as 1800 settlers were founding new villages east side Susquehanna River east Lancaster County line
