Franklin Park is a public park in the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The park was created in 1892 as part of the Franklinburg Settlement and Recreation Area. It is named for General George Washington Franklin, one of the founders of Pittsburgh. The area now includes parts of downtown and Squirrel Hill. In 1921, the park was annexed by Pittsburgh and became part of that city's Entertainment District. On October 15, 1990, it was redesignated as a national historic district by the National Park Service with its headquarters located in nearby Downtown Pittsburgh. The first land for Franklin Park was purchased from John Lawless by Trustees of Allegheny County on November 11, 1892. The land had been used for agricultural purposes since 1795 when it was surveyed by colonel David Forbes and Surveyor General James Craig along what is now known as I-79 (South Boulevard). The purchase price was $6,000 cash plus two horses and four oxen. The settlement at Franklinburg consisted of 675 acres (240 ha) including present-day east side blocks A through G on the north side of Monongahela River opposite Fort Pitt (now Mellon Arena), west block H on South Side Street between Second Avenue and Main Street to form what is today called East Block I; south block J between Second Avenue and Third Street on North Side Street to form what is today called West Block II; east block K between Third Street and Fourth Avenue to form what is today called North Blocks III–IV; center or core blocks A through D were unnumbered but lay within present day I-79 corridor from 2nd Ave.-3rd Ave., then 1st Ave.-2ND St., 3rd Ave.-4th Ave., 5th Ave.-6TH St., 7th Ave.–8TH St., 9TH ST.—the eastern border ran along this alignment Public Square still stands today near corner 4th St/5th Rd.; in total there were 10 original blocks which were redefined following annexation intoPittsburgh in 1921: When complete all 116 acres would have made up present day Franklin Parkadin addition built 1924-1927 divided into areas shown below: In order to achieve symmetry with other parks across Allegheny County which also contained large parcels donated by individuals or trusts throughout their growth - most notably Mifflinburg Borough - new streets were laid out parallel to those existing within Bonnyville Township such as 26 th street NW & 27 th street SE being routed away from Montrose Road thence northerly along Penn Hills Bluff untilreaching Braddock Heights where they turned easterly back towards Montrose Road before rejoining 26 th street NW nearToday’s PA Turnpike interchange

Franklin Park was once a part of the Borough of Huntingdon. In 1876, the borough was dissolved and divided into two parts, Franklin Park and Huntingdon Township. The park was added to the township in 1912.
