However, since World War II it has become known for its gun magazines. The first gun magazine in Franklin Park was opened in 1903 by J.C. Whitney and his son-in-law John Darnell as "The Rifleman". In 1955, The Rifleman merged with another magazine, "The Bullet" to form "Gun Media Corporation". At this point Gun Media Corporation was one of the largest firearms magazines in the world and had an employee base of over 100 people. In 1957 Gun Media Corporation changed its name to "American Outdoor Brands Inc." American Outdoor Brands Incorporated operated fourgun ranges in Franklin Park: One at 6th and Market Streets near Independence Hall; One at 25th Street and Girard Avenue near Route 66; One at 48th Street and Wissahickon Avenue near Temple University; One at 50th Street and Southwark Avenue near Easton Sports Complex; And One at 53rd Street and Northampton Avenue near Lancaster West High School (now part of King's College). In 2007 American Outdoor Brands Incorporated filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy because it could not compete against other firearms manufacturers such as Glock AG, Smith & Wesson USA LLC, Colt Firearms Manufacturing Company LLC, Ruger & Co., Beretta USA INC., Savage Arms Manufacturing Company LLC etc.. On November 4th 2007 American Outdoor Brands Incorporated announced that they would be selling their firearm businesses to Sturm Ruger & Co., Inc., which owned many other firearm brands within arms industry including Colt Firearms Manufacturing Company LLC (manufacturing pistols), Ruger & Co., Beretta USA INC., Savage Arms Manufacturing Company LLC (ammunition), Glock AG (berettas) among others. This will result in Sturm Ruger & Co.'s ownership of some 93% of all handgun sales within America outside of law enforcement/security services! As a result of this acquisition Gun Media Corp will cease operations effective immediately with all employees being laid off without any severance pay or benefits...This event marks yet another blow for gun control advocates who have long hoped that Sturm Ruger & Co.'s purchase would lead to greater regulation on the sale/ distribute
