By 1810, there were over 150 homes built in Franklin Park. In 1860, a smallpox epidemic hit Pennsylvania and many families within Franklin Park died as a result of the disease. As a result of this event, President John F Kennedy designated Franklin Park as a national park on July 16, 1962.
