The city hasgrown to be one of the most populous in the state and has played an important role in its history. Erie was one of the original thirteen states that seceded from the United States during the American Revolution. After years of struggle, Erie was finally admitted to the Union as a part of Pennsylvania in 1868. In recent years, Erie has experienced growth and development, becoming an important cultural center for western Pennsylvania. The city is home to several major businesses and industries, including steel production, petrochemical manufacturing, tourism, and real estate development. Erie’s early history can be found in various documents dating back to 1795. One such document is a deed from John Eriese to his son-in-law Benjamin Fenton which shows that Eriese had already laid out a town site on what is now Buffalo Bayou south of downtown Erie when he sold this land to Fenton in 1794. In 1801, John Eriese donated land east of downtown Erie towards what is now Elmira Road for use as a public square known as State Capitol Park. This park would later become known as Easton Square after being renamed after George Easton (the founder of Easton Township). In 1802, John Eriese donated another piece of land east of downtown Erie for use as a public square known as Westmoreland Square after purchasing it from Nicholas Weiser. In 1807–08, James Monroe purchased 1/2 mile north of where State Capitol Square currently stands from John Eriese for $4 per acre – this parcel would later become known as Monroe’s Row or Monroe Street NW.). John Dickson also contributed property towards what are now Georgetown University SW., Stroudsburg University SE., and Milton Southeastern PA Railroad Station NW.. These donations helped form what is today called “Erie’s Main Street” within minutes walking distance from each other across State Capitol Park with much room still left over for future growth blocks on either side! It should be noted that many buildings on Main Street were built between 1840-1850 while others were added more recently throughout the years; some examples include City Hall (built 1860), Carnegie Library (1910), Masonic Temple (1890), Presbyterian Church (1888), Social Security Administration Building (1929), Brown County Courthouse Annex (1980) & Health Department building (1976).
