On July 4th, 1825, Buffalo was officially incorporated as a city and started to grow rapidly as a result of new transportation methods such as canals and railroads which arrived during the 1830s brought increased trade through the region - especially with industries like textiles coming from Canada via Toronto and New York City

It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area and is bordered by Allegheny County to the south, Butler County to the north, and Luzerne County to the east. Erie was founded on August 29, 1799 by settlers from York and Lancaster counties in Pennsylvania as a trading post on Buffalo Creek near what is now Uniontown in Lawrence County. On November 1, 1825, Erie became a city when it incorporated as a borough with a population of 12,000 people; it had been an unincorporated community since 1821. ThecityofErie was annexed by Pittsburgh on December 14, 1901 after Pittsburgs annexation of all but one Township in Erie County (White Oak). Prior to that date most township incorporation had been through vote or petitioning of their residents only. In 1907 Pittsburgs annexations resulted in creation of Allegheny and Butler Counties along with Luzerne until then Unorganized Borough of Northampton which also included much rural land near modern-day Scranton/Wilkes-Barre

In 1879, the town became part of the newly formed United States County of Allegheny. On November 3rd, 1920, Erie became an independent city following a referendum vote by its citizens.
