Ephrata is a small town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The town was founded by Swiss immigrants in 1759 as Ephrata Township. In 1837, it became an incorporated village and in 1881 it became a borough. It was officially designated a city on July 1, 1889. On December 12, 1898, it merged with the neighboring borough of Johnstown to form the current city of Ephrata. The community located on the Buckskin Valley near Reading Road and State Street developed around two Lutheran churches—St Michael’s and Christ’s—and a gristmill built about 1800 by Jacob Kappner. The first post office for Ephrata opened in 1824 and continued operation until 1907; its last letter added was “e” for extension because of its location on State Street between Willow and Flower Streets (now School Avenue). In 1840, Chas Sauer began construction of what would become known as Sauer Park and adjacent fields on what is now Northumberland Avenue just north of the intersection with Westmoreland Avenue east of Center Road. This land had been donated by August Wilhelm Sauer to his friend George Washington Carver Jr., who also started Canning Company No. 2 south of town along Wawa Drive (now I-95). When Carver's company failed to make money selling canned goods above market price he decided to close it down and donate all his profits back to Carver's original benefactor August Wilhelm Sauer. In later years there were several other businesses associated with this initial effort such as groceries store pioneer Julius Jorgensen's grocery store which operated from 1841-1848 across from where today's Chili’s restaurant stands; auto parts store pioneer Augustus Kelley operated for eight years starting 1863 before closing up shop due to competition from larger stores; miller Hermann Muller ran a flour Mill from 1865-1876 on Market Street east of Center Road; Singer Sewing Machine Co., Inc.'s factory building still stands next door to US Steel production facilities dating back to 1911 - see photo below! ; ice cream parlor "Doris" operated locally until 1979 when ownership passed through into nearby Conshohocken Borough ice cream business then closed permanently after many years operating outbuildings within their premises - see photo below!

Ephrata, Pennsylvania (formerly called Allegany County) is a town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to what is now Ephrata were German farmers who arrived in 1798 and named their new land "Ephrata". The name derived from the Greek word "ephiro" meaning "a shining gold ornamment", and "taeras" meaning "plain country". In 1828, the United States government offered to give 12 square miles of land east of Scranton for an agricultural college. A group of men led by Presbyterian minister William Lyon Mackenzie donated 3/5ths of a mile (1 km2) of rural road northeast ofpresentday Ephrata for that purpose. On March 1, 1830, President Andrew Johnson signed legislation creating Allegany County and naming it after General James K. Polk Sr., Commander in Chief during World War I and then Secretary of War under Woodrow Wilson. When Allegany County was created it included all present-day Lackawanna County except for three small settlements on the southernmost tip of Holmes Island: White Sands Settlement on Fort Scott Road near modern Clearwater Township; West Stockton Landing on Delaware Bayou near modern Dunmore; and East Stockton Landing on Susquehanna River just south of present-day Wilkes-Barre. These three villages formed what is today known as Northampton Township within Allegany County when they were detached from Southampton Township which also became part of LackawannaCounty around 1800.. In 1905 a group including some local farmers bought 614 acres (250 hectares) southwest of Ephrata off private landowner John Laughlin for $10 per acre ($4 per hectare). This purchase set off development that continues to this day with annual farm fairs being held there today.. Allegany Countyspiritual landscape began developing soon after when Rev J H Hackett founded First Baptist Church in 1903 A few years later he founded Second Baptist Church at East Falls location which has been home to both churches ever since.. Under pressure from white supremacists during World War II many residents chose not to participate in the war effort but did nonetheless contribute food parcels and money to help Allied forces fight against fascism. After the war many people returned home looking for jobs opportunities while others moved away because they found no hope hereabouts postwar.. In 1951 representatives from six small communities surrounding Ephrattaincluding Northampton Townshipand two other townshipsin northwestern Lancaster COUNTY gathered together with intentto form a regional planning commission to study ways bestto improve communication between these various areas.. This effort failed however due lackof participation by most concerned community members who felt left out when planners didn't include them in decisions about transportation, housing etc.. On July 8th 1960 residents voted overwhelmingly(93% yes vote)to change their name back to AlleganyCountytomy grandparents had always wanted it changed back so if any problems came up with getting state funding our church could handle them like everyone else does down there
Ephrata was founded by the Susquehanna Company in 1746. The town served as a trading post on the Susquehanna River. In 1768, Ephrata became a borough and was incorporated as such in 1814. The population grew rapidly during the 19th century and by 1900, there were 4,000 residents in the town. However, during World War I, Ephrata was unsuccessfully attacked by German forces and its citizens fled to other towns in the area. After the war, many businesses closed down and the population dwindled again. In 1950, however, Ephrata regained some of its former prosperity when it became an Scioto County Borough.
