Rural development in Berks County began with the opening of the Reading Railroad in 1859 and continued through the construction of Canonsburg Road in 1865 and then to Ephrata in 1868. In 1881, a water main replacement project increased water availability for local mills from Monongahela River to Ephrata and then to all of central Pennsylvania. This made Ephrata one of the most industrialized towns within 100 miles (160 km) of Pittsburgh. A steel mill opened in 1901 and became one of the largest employers in town; it closed its doors in 1961. The Soft Cases Company's Model No. 1 Pistol Case also had a metal clip that allowed it to be attached around the waistband of pants so it would not touch ground when carried outside or during long walks in nature. This pistol case became very popular and many other companies copied it including Smith & Wesson who produced their own version called the Smith & Wesson model 619Soft GunCase which continued into production until 1958[1]. Ephrata is a town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Ephrata were the Dutch in 1618 and 1619. The English landed there on November 26, 1755, during the French and Indian War (1754-1763). They named it after Epaphras Sanders, an officer in Captain John Adams' Company of Delaware volunteers who served with General George Washington at Yorktown. The town's first settler was Nicholas Pilex who arrived in 1764. He built a log cabin on what is now Park Avenue near present day Route 681. Other early settlers included John Calkins (a justice of the peace) and his brother-in-law William Troup (whose farm still stands west of present day Main Street). A store was opened by Eliack Biddle in 1768 and he also built a barn which still stands today inside the limits of Ephrata Township. In 1824 Ebenezer Sargent bought land east of present day Main Street from Nicholas Pilex for $2 per acre and began building homes which remain extant today as well as a gristmill that derived its name from him - Sargent's Mill & Elevator Co.. In 1827 Isaac White moved to this location from his home just south of where Park Avenueises now stand and established himself as one of Ephrata's earliest merchants. In 1828 Ebenezer Sargent married Lydia Lovells; they had two children: Experience (1829-1912), who became an artist, and Ezekiel "Ezekiel" Sargent Jr., born October 10th 1830 outside Ofram Patent No 2 within Lancaster County PA; he later became an insurance agent with J side Wickersham & Sons Incorporated located in Reading PA until his death on October 25th 1945 aged 89 years old . experience continued her family tradition by becoming an artist herself sometime between 1897 - 1999 .
