Ephrata is a town in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,869 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Schuylkill County. In 1777, Ephrata's first settler was John Welsh who arrived from Philadelphia with his family and land grants from the British Crown. He erected a log cabin on what is now First Street in what is now downtown Ephrata. In 1802, John Welsh's son Isaac built a gristmill on Water Street which still stands today. In 1838, David Harker purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of present-day Easton and began to build the community here known as Harkerstown. By 1840, most of this area had been developed into Ephrata and it became incorporated as a borough in 1847 with 1,500 residents. The first school in Ephrata opened in 1839; it was called "Harkertown School". The current building was completed in 1908 and serves as the town hall today. In 1850s Captain John Ritchie established an academy here that educated Native Americans for many years until its closure by the U.S Department of Education in 1954 following American Indian policy changes that denied education to Native Americans living within white populations withoutIndian reservations..
