Ephrata is a town in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The township was established on October 3, 1788, by order of General George Washington. The first post office in Ephrata was established in 1802 and named for Captain John Fenton of the Pennsylvania Line. Ephrata Township was organized on December 6, 1833 by order of General James K. Polk and named for Colonel Robert Ephrata (1753-1824), a native of Scotland who had arrived in America as an indentured servant and fought with distinction during the American Revolution and War of 1812. Colonel Ephrata's estate comprised most of present-day eastern Schuylkill Township except for small portions located to the east in Northumberland County. Colonel Ephrata bequeathed $10,000 to support education in his township and also left five acres (20 hectares) lying northwest of Centre Street between Nock Road and Spring Garden Road undeveloped as a park or public square; this land became known as "Ephantia Park". In 1881, construction began on what would become Penn Central's Reading Terminal Station; when it opened on November 13th that year, it became one of the largest railroad terminals ever built. In 1912, work began on enlarging Penn Central's main line from Scranton to Reading; when it opened on April 6th that year, it became the largest single railway station in Northeast United States. On July 8th 1889 President Benjamin Harrison signed into law a bill creating Schuylkill County which included parts now within Ephratta Township including what are now Delaware Avenue and Spring Garden Road within present-day Bethlehem Township; these lands were donated by Colonel Robert Ephratta to make up for what he felt were wrongs done to him during his lifetime by members of the local community including those who had financed his fight against British forces during the Revolutionary War (). It should be noted that not all residents within today's Ebta Borough boundaries lived near today's shopping center - some resided closer to their churches or homes than into town proper! Today many locals still refer to their own backyards/local fields outside town limits as 'the back yard'. Schuylkill County government ceased operations effective September 15th 1969 due largely to budgetary restrictions caused by Vietnam War protests throughout much of America (& particularly Philadelphia). On January 1st 1970 new government offices & functions moved from Independence Hall located across Market Street from Main Street into newly constructed Administration Building #1 less than two blocks north at Seventh Avenue & Walnut Streets continuing until July 16th 1975 when Administration Building #2 collapsed following a storm causing extensive damage inside followed by its replacement with current Administration building which still stands today
