John Hays established a mission station at what is now West Broad Street and Northumberland Avenue in Ephrata to proselytize for Christianity among the Native Americans living around him and to help them become Christianized. A few years later, Rev. George White organized a church here with 80 baptized members. In 1825 Revs Joseph Kapp and Hiram Cushing organized another church here with 300 members; they were followed by ministers John Wesley Smith (1830-1915) and Charles Finney (1835-1911). In 1830, settlers began moving into what would become Ephrata Township from nearby Monroeville Township; some built log cabins while others constructed more permanent homes using lumber that had been brought over on horseback or as pack animals. By 1840, there were about 150 residents in Ephrata Township and 100 residents in neighboring Monroeville Township. The discovery of oil rigs near Amherstburg during the 1920s led to increased energy production throughout much of western Pennsylvania including Hazleton and Ephrata which saw major construction projects such as new roads and bridges as well as the erection of factory buildings such as the RCA plant on South Euclid Avenue which employed up to 1,500 people until its closure in 1978 due to pollution concerns brought on by consumption of products made at that plant

Ephrata is located on the Susquehanna River west of Lancaster and east of Harrisburg. It is bordered by the towns of New Stanton to the north, Allentown to the east, and Reading to the south. The area that would become Ephrata was first occupied by Native Americans who lived near what is now downtown Lancaster. One account says that John Penn's father-in-law, George Washington, camped there in 1751 while he was on his way from Westmoreland County to Yorktown. In 1788 when Pennsylvania declared its independence from British rule, settlers began moving into what became Ephrata from surrounding areas including Allentown and Bethlehem Township. In 1814 when General Andrew Jackson invaded Maryland during the War of 1812 and took Baltimore City with him as part of his victory, parts of eastern Lancaster County were included in his command. The following year General John Forbes ordered all American forces out of Maryland except for a few hundred men who were garrisoning Fort Mifflin along the Delaware River until it could be rebuilt after being destroyed by an attack by Spanish troops in 1807. This left most residents living under British occupation as their military units withdrew back across Canada or Ohio into Pennsylvania territory where they started farming again after spending time fighting against American forces during Reconstruction years in Georgia and Alabama. In 1828 developers bought land around present day Ephrata from landowners seeking to create a town on one side of a canal connecting Susquehanna River with Philadelphia proper on the other side which would have allowed them to build warehouses and mills necessary for processing raw materials exported downriver from states such asPennsylvania Dutch farmers exporting wheat flour and other goods also used canals providing transportation links between these growing citiesites necessary for both economic development as well as social stability needed for large numbers of people living close together without fear or violence associated with isolated rural lives
