After World War II (1939-1945), many large companies left for relocation or consolidation elsewhere as technology changed; however, four small plants still operate today: Allentown Steelworkers Local 264, Erie Lackawanna Railroad Co., Keystone Coal & Coke Company, and Stevenson Coal Mines Incorporated which produce lignite coal mined around Bellefonte Mountain northeast of town off PA 421/PA 422 on Stevensons Run Road just south of US 11 intersection The post office opened on November 1st 1800 under name "Ephratah". It was renamed "Ephrata" on December 12th 1830 by order of Governor Edward Ellicott because most people hereabouts desired to become known as "Ephantia". Today, only a few historical relics remain from what once was one of Pennsylvania's most vibrant communities.

The town was named for Ephrata, a small village in north-central Pennsylvania, which had been founded by Dutch settlers in 1682. The area that now makes up Ephrata was part of Huntingdon County until 1802 when it was added to Butler County. In 1825, Ephrata became a township and in 1828, it became a city. On July 1, 1920, Ephrata became a borough and on January 1, 1938 it became a city again.
