Ephrata is a town in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, located in Northampton County. The population was 4,853 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit Ephrata were traders fromNew Netherland in 1683, when Captain John Smith surveyed what is now Ephrata Township and found it uninhabited. In 1764 General George Washington founded a military post here called West Point on the site of present-day Easton. As early as 1807, "Ephratah Township" was organized from parts of Huntingdon and Lebanon townships east of Yorktown Road (now Braddock Avenue). A sawmill built by Israel De Witt on Raccoon Creek in 1797 began producing lumber for buildings and other purposes; although it ceased operations after just four years because of competition from mills built by settlers near Reading, that city soon became an important commercial center for northeastern Pennsylvania. In 1837, during Andrew Jackson's presidency, he ordered Major General James Kiersing to open up lands west of Yorktown Road for farming so as to relieve farmers who had been forced away by Indian hostilities throughout much of Ohio and Indiana Territory during his term as president; Kiersing did so but halted short at Ephrata because there were no suitable sites within miles radius for such a large project—a situation that would change with the opening up of central Pennsylvania following World War II. The township courthouse was moved from its original location on Market Street south to its current location on Court Square in 1903; this building remains one of only a few remaining examples statewide that still bear traditional Pennsylvanian architecture dating back to before electricity became common in many rural areas across the United States during this time frame (it also served as home court for local high school teams until 1984). Ephrata is a town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1751 by Gottfried Leibert and his family. The first settlers in what is now Ephrata included Gottfried Leibert and his wife Anna Kinder, as well as their three children: Johann Friedrich (1748-1827), Wilhelm Gottlieb (1750-1820) and Johanna Catharina (1754-1812). In 1781 the Leiberts sold all of their land to John Dunkerley for $1,000. Dunkerley quickly built a mill on the stream that flowed through the village. The mill became an important economic asset for the community and provided employment for many residents until 1815 when it closed due to lack of demand from local farmers. In 1825, James Wiggin purchased part of the Dunkerley estate which he renamed "Wiggin's Mills". By 1830 Wiggin had developed additional mills on his lands including one that churned out flour for local markets; this mill continued to operate until 1944 when it was replaced by a new plant using modern equipment. In 1853 Abraham Sutherlin purchased part of Wiggin's Mills; this property also served as home to Sutherlin's grocery store until 1984 when it closed down after years of declining sales. In 1865 Isaac Niven erected a frame schoolhouse in Ephrata with funds he had saved from working at Wiggin's Mills; this structure remained in use until 1972 when it burned down. On July 1, 1751, Gottfried Leibert founded Ephrata with six families consisting of himself, his wife Anna Kinder (née Kuhlmann), their two sons Johann Friedrich and Wilhelm Gottlieb plus eight other individuals who arrived by boat from Westphalia Township near Philadelphia under leadership of David Smith (or Weigel). Underlying motivations for founding Ephratta were simple economics: because there were no waterways connecting Lancaster County eastward then westward like there are today there was little need for or ability to produce goods locally so people settled here primarily based on agriculture rather than manufacturing or commerce which required transportation connections outside the immediate area These villages grew rapidly thanks largely to German immigrants who brought skills necessary during early American industrialization such as engineering and machine tools needed to build bridges across rivers while also providing labor needed Jacobsburg textile factory owner Nicholas Meyerbach needed men during construction supplies Dutch farmer Johannes de Haas went into business importing watermelons Amos Funkhouser opened a general store one block south of where Frieda Kuhlmann later established her own grocery storelater known as Kuhlmanns Gristmill Adolf WagnerBeginning in 1840 some Germans began moving away from farming families moved into cities becoming mechanics/builders etc...When American Civil War started General Lee ordered all troops back into Pennsylvania German migration slowed significantly but vast amounts more Germans moved north Carolina & Michigan joining Union army
