The original name of Ephrata was Philaheathania and it took its present name from King Philip II of Spain after he visited the area in 1675. The first European to visit what is now Ephrata were the Dutch in 1624 when they landed on the site as part of their Grand Tour of North America. In 1748, Colonel George Washington and his army encamped for a night nearPhilipstown after crossing the Susquehanna River at that location. That same year, Thomas Penn laid out what would become Ephrata Township on land that he had purchased from Chief Cadwaladerwarckes family east of Huntingdon Valley. In 1834, William Hartsbury erected a toll bridge over the Delaware River at what is now Interstate 81/US 21 to provide access to goods coming downriver from Wilmington and other towns in western Lancaster County. This opened up local business opportunities for those who wanted to ship goods long distances without having to go through Philadelphia or New York City. By 1839, only two buildings still remain standing in downtown Ephrata – Hartsbury’s Bridge House (now home to Easton Community College) and General Store (now inside an auto dealership). When steamboats started arriving on the Delaware River during this time period, businesses along Route 8 north from Philaheiaphia began providing transportation for passengers and goods ashore across Ironbound Creek which separates modern day Northeast Paoli Township from today’s West Chester Township on the east side of I-81/US 21. The first steamship landing here was made by John Stevens on July 12th 1846 with his schooner Spartiate . After several more launches until 1850 when built by Pilegrew & Sons wharf masters Wm Hubbard & Fenton Landing became known as “Pennsylvania Station” duestopbeing established just south of where Hartsbury Bridge now stands; passenger traffic increased so much that large warehouses were built around wharf areas such as Hubbard & Fenton Landing especially duringsteamboat season with concern about fire risks associated with open fires aboard large vessels moored alongside riverbanks all summer long! This continued into next century however with visits by boatsloads of people daily via ferry across Ironbound Creek until development changed forever when state Routes 8&20 were realigned creating an almost straight path between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh opening up new opportunities for travel economy related jobs right near then current boundary between Paoli Borough on one side and Allentown Borough on another making it easy for people looking for work or pleasure not only get close enoughto big city life but also experience what rural life used to be like before motor vehicles arrived!

The first European settlers in Ephrata were Lenape Native Americans who arrived from the Delaware River area in 1682. They built their first permanent house on what is now State Route 202 near present-day Parkersburg. The early settlers also began to grow corn and wheat for local markets and sent their crops to nearby Lancaster for sale. In 1757, Ephrata Township was organized under the Pennsylvania General Assembly and took its name from the springs at Ephrata (now known as White Haven). At that time, there were only three white men living in Township: John Smith, Jacob Hocker and Nicholas Yeager. In 1824, an act of Congress created Berks County with its own government and court system; this made it possible for Ephrata to become one of the few townships within Berks County without a tax rate set by parliamentarians. The first post office was established in 1827, but it did not open until 1830 because of disease-ravaged competition among frontier villages forced to switch to mail service by British forces during the War of 1812. During World War II, many residents joined up with U.S. services including those who served in submarines USS Ponce (SS-315), USS Beale (BB-38) and USS Decatur (AGM- 84). Some even worked on secret projects such as Operation Crossroads which targeted Japanese military installations across America using numerous codebreaking operations undertaken at various stations around America's east coast during World War II
Ephrata was a small town in the United States, located in Lancaster County on the south side of the Susquehanna River. The population was 1,591 at the 2000 census. It is now part of Allentown-Easton, Pennsylvania. The first settlers arrived in 1772 from Lancaster County and founded the village of Ephrata on a site near present-day Bethlehem. They were followed by others in subsequent decades. In 1824, when Lancaster County was created, Ephrata became one of its original townships. After several years of growth it had a population of 2,000 and began to build up what would become an important commercial center. In 1876, when Pennsylvania seceded from the Union, Ephrata voted to join the new state but failed to receive enough support from other towns in Lancaster County to make it an official municipality. Restoration efforts began soon after and today some think that if it weren't for William Penn's wish that all municipalities within his province should be equal under one roof, Ephrata may have thrived as an independent township for many more years. In 1907, when eastern Pennsylvania joined the USWA (United States Labor Party), Ephrata became one of its first union strongholds; during World War I it lent its support to both sides and helped organize laboratories across the county. In 1933-34 local officials successfully mounted a campaign to annex parts of neighboring Westmoreland Township so as to create a larger town with more services and amenities than what existed currently within Ephratta limits; this effort failed due largely to public opposition led by several prominent residents including Mayor John Hynes). "Ephantatta" continued being used as an informal name for Allentown until 1967 when "Allentown-Easton" was changed effective July 1st following moves by then Mayor Ed Rendell who saw "Ephantatta"'s unofficial status as an obstacle preventing him from becoming fully entrenched into his new city role."
