Ephrata is a town in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Allentown–Berlin–Easton, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Ephrata was founded in 1757 by Ephraim and Martha Franklin as a trading post on the Susquehanna River between Easton and Allentown. In 1828, it became a borough and in 1854 it became an incorporated town. The name derives from Greek ephemera meaning "brief time," because until 1757 there was only one year's worth of crops per year available for shipment to Europe. The people who first settled here were farmers who had come overland from England during the revolutionary war. They started raising hay and wheat on their own land but soon realized that they needed some help to get their crops up and running so they hired men to help them do this work. Eventually other farmers came over from Lancaster County and started farming here as well, making Ephrata one of the most diverse towns in Lehigh County. Today, many businesses are headquartered in Ephrata including Cargill Inc., Mead Johnson Nutritionaceuticals Inc., Pfizer Inc., Amazon Web Services, Comcast Corporation (NBCUniversal), Asurion Home Security Systems, Ameristar Health Corporation (Ameristar Independent) and Wells Fargo & Company (WFC). There are also several universities located in or close to Ephrata including Albright University which is ranked among America's best private universities by UPI; American University which has been named a Beta-World Universities School by World Economic Forum; Temple University which has affiliations with both Penn State Altoona and Temple University Philadelphia; Lehigh Carbon Community College - part of Lehighton Regional Campus - which offers associate degrees programs leading to four-year degrees;and Dogan Kupfer AG whose headquarters are located just outside of town limits near Bethlehem Steel Plant

Ephrata is a town in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,000 at the 2000 census. It was first settled by Germans in the late 17th century and became part of the United States after the American Revolution. The name comes from Greek mythology, Ephrata being one of the Seven Sisters who were taken prisoner by Persephone in Hades. Ephrata is located at (39.827693, -75.501765). According to the 2010 census, its population was 1,969. It is bordered by Huntingdon Township to the north and east; Fairview Township to the south; and Weiskopf Township to the west. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Ephrata about sixty years ago on October 3, 1682 when Captain John Smith of Virginia explored what are now Schuylkill County and Huntingdon Township.. He named it "Woolwich" after his native Woolwich Parish in England where he had been born some three years earlier on December 15th of that year.. At that time there were no towns or villages within this area... There are several reports that claims George Washington visited Ephrata while on his way to Valley Forge during winter quarters in 1777-1778 but they have yet to be verified... patriot Major General Nathanael Greene passed through here on his way from Valley Forge into Maryland in December 1779 while en route from Yorktown following Howe's surrender... About two weeks later Continental General Johann Breda arrived with troops from Yorkshire at Upper New Castle Creek just outside present day Ephrata limits... On January 6th of that year Brigadier General Benjamin Lincoln along with Colonel Abraham Shippen set up camp near present day Lower Mifflin Church Roadstead for six days before moving northeast across Penn State Line towards Chambersburg which they reached on January 12th just prior to battle with British forces under Cornwallis at Yorktown... By early February smallpox had broken out among both sides resulting in over one hundred dead Americans and many more wounded including General Washington himself who succumbed four days later "... Despite some brave fighting throughout most ofJanuary and February Lieutenant Colonel Nicholas Trimble led a detachment of militia against British forces skirmishing along present day Lower Mifflin Church Roadstead successfully repelling an attack"... Aftermath: On February 14th Patriot Private Ezekiel Haggerty brought news that heavy fighting was taking place around Upper New Castle Creek between Tories &British soldiers resulted 4 killed &10wounded Lt Col Nicholas Trimble led Militiaty aground 5 miles NW Orange Twp 01/15/1780 POWs Also found Dead inside Tory Camp Nearby..." In total only 9 militiamen Casualties reported during Battle By late spring 1781 English withdrawals commenced as American forces pushed deeper intoPennsylvania undefeated...... official US History says "In April [1781] large numbers[of British troops] evacuated their positions along East Branch Thames near Chambersburg Colony (present-day Huntingdon), Germantown (now Philadelphia), Monmouth Junction (now Allentown), Ambler (now Meadville), Lancaster City (now Reading), Slippery Rock (now Erie), Swarthmore Borough (now Doylestown) and Scranton Townships [...] Most notably these areas lay abandoned due to disease outbreaks which continued unabated until after independence" After independence Ephrato formed part of West Liberty District government created by Congress on March 24, 1801 On November 15 1806 Governor Isaac Brock entered into an agreement with Samuel Chase giving him 160 acres including all present day Schuylkill County line eastward to White Sands Run then northeasterly continuing past White Sands River until reaching Lackawanna Bay - thus giving him control over virtually all watersheds within modern Schuylkill County bounded by those rivers - making him effectively ruler over all farmers living within those boundaries for anywhere between 50-200 years .... Finally effective November 22nd 1825 Indians ceded land east &northeast of Lackawanna Bay backto PA state government thru Treaty called Susquehanna Purchase
Ephrata was founded in 1751 by George Washington and his brother, James. The town was named for the epistolary poem “Ephrata” by Lord Byron. The original log cabin community burned down in 1814, but the town was again founded in 1850 when two brothers, Abraham and Solomon Ingersoll, donated land to the new community. Ephrata is a part of Lehigh Valley Statistical Area.
