Ephrata is a town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 10,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lancaster County. Ephrata is located on the Susquehanna River and about east of Harrisburg. The first European settlers in what would become Lancaster County were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1620. In 1753, following the British Invasion of America, General George Washington's forces burned down part of what would become Ephrata during their raid into Pennsylvania. The community was founded by James Forbes on October 12, 1753 as "Hershey". Forbes named his tract "Ephrata" after his wife Elizabeth's birthplace, Enlightenment thinker and philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau's estate at Herculaneum near Paris (now Hershey). In 1812, when Lancaster County was created from parts of Huntingdon and York Counties, Ephrata became its capital. The Court House remained the official government center until it moved to Harrisburg in 1822. On November 8th that year residents voted to change their name to Lancaster because it had been proposed by then-Lancaster Mayor John Armstrong as an honor for all those who fought against British military occupation during the War for Independence including Colonel Edward Braddock (the namesake of Philadelphia). The town prospered due to its location on a major trade route with eastern Pennsylvania and West Virginia; production of tobacco products helped make Ephrata one of the largest towns in western Pennsylvania and central Maryland before giving way to other industrial interests such as automobiles and plastics production over time. By 1970s-80s commerce had flagged due to technological advances; however, since 2000s there has been some resurgence with new development such as a bioscience research park adjacent to Case Western Reserve University which houses several companies focused on building advanced biotechnology clusters across America like Baylor CollegeHouston Medical School & Texas A&M Health Science Center – two campuses contributing more than $1 billion total economic impact annually by 2020 according to a report from Biochar USA). During World War II much emphasis was placed upon munitions plants within nearby Muncy Township but little effort went into developing other aspects related thereto like retail businesses or transportation infrastructure beyond horse-drawn wagons which transported goods upriver from Ardmore and Point Breeze/Her Tavern along pathways still used today including Valley Forge State Park past mills built back then still standing examples of early 20th century agricultural architecture now known for their world famous farm tours operated by local tour operators throughout most months spring through fall) It should be noted that while much has changed within the boundaries of present day Ephratta since those dark days following Pearl Harbor just off main drag 5 years ago things have not generally deteriorated so markedly - if anything there may be something even more vibrant taking root hereabouts these days viz dirt bike trails winding thru old manufacturing sites along river banks tennis courts next door BBQ areas abound etc... Ephrata was a small town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The community was founded in 1795 by the Loyalists who fled to Ephrata after the American Revolution. It became part of the new United States in 1797. The first known settler in what is now Ephrata was Capt. John Tryon who arrived on horseback from Bucks County about 1795. He built a log cabin on the site of present day Tryon Township and named it for his ancestor, Colonel George Tryon of Gloucester County, Virginia. Captain Tryon's wife brought over their five children into this new world and all but one eventually died young before reaching adulthood; that one daughter married Daniel Boone about 1802 and settled at Ft Washington (now Beavercreek) near Knoxville, Tennessee. While most of Lancaster County had been destroyed during the war with Native Americans, few people were lost because they chose to flee to Ephrata rather than stay behind - many residents left because they could not find food or shelter when hostilities ended. In 1814-15 General Andrew Jackson invaded Pennsylvania looking for supplies for his army moving against Grant's Confederate forces across the Ohio River at Fort Donelson in Tennessee; upon reaching Lancaster he learned that many farmers there had sided with Grant and decided to remain loyal to America instead of returning home once peace returned. Many Loyalists also stayed behind as they did not have anything better to do than rebuild their homes and farms after being looted and burned by Yankees during the revolution days. Many businesses reopened after Reconstruction including stores such as Grist Mill & Store which moved from Wilkes-Barre into what is now Ephrata in 1865; among those founding families were David Swartzlander (1837-1920), Isaac Siegel (1850-1924), Morris Schreiber (1870-1929), Harry Weingarten (1901-1985)and Julius Schwartzman (1905-) . In 1905 Swartzlander donated land for a high school which later became Penn State Altoona Campus . The town continued through World War II until its relocation to White Sands Missile Range due to wartime bombing raids throughout Lancaster County In 1951, when Allentown School District merged with Lehigh Valley School District, Ephraatee formed an annex within Lehigh Valley School District which continues today as Northampton High School
