Ephrata is a small town in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of Reading County and is located on the Susquehanna River. The town was founded in 1799 by Hugh Mercer and others as a stop on the road from Harrisburg to Philadelphia. In 1814, when James K. Polk became president, he moved Ephrata to be within his presidential sphere of influence. The name "Ephrata" comes from Greek word for "a place where there are many figs." The first settler in what is now Ephrata Township was Isaac Aspinwall. He built a cabin on what is now East One Hundredth Street in 1817-18. During the American Civil War, Ephrata sided with the Union side but remained within Pennsylvanian borders until 1861 when it seceded from Pennsylvania and joined Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell. In 1865, following Lincoln's assassination, Union troops burned down Aspinwall's cabin and took all his property into custody; however, most of it reverted back to ownership by Aspinwall some time after that event happened. In 1868–1869, John Hays organized a wagon train through Pennsylvania en route to California via Oregon Territory; during this trip they passed through Ephrata on their way northward (the first wagon train ever). Hays left behind his beautiful oil painting "The Arrival of the Wagon Train at Emporia Junction" which hangs today in the Pennsylvania Statehouse Museum in Harrisburg (now part of University Park). Ephrata was founded in 1737 by George Washington and his wife, Martha Washington. The land at which Ephrata now stands was donated to the town by Captain John Callender. The first known house was built on what is now Market Street in 1738. Ephrata's population reached a peak of around 100 in the late 18th century, but declined during the 19th century due to factors such as immigration and industrialization. The present day Ephrata community emerged in the early 20th century when farmers began moving into the area from other parts of Pennsylvania and Maryland. In 1924, Ephrata became part of the newly formed City of Philadelphia.
