Ephrata is a small town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reading–Allentown–Wilkes-Barre, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Ephrata were natives of Delaware and Easton, Pennsylvania who migrated to this area about 1750. They erected sawmills on the Susquehanna River and by 1800 had built two churches in what is now Ephrata Township: First Baptist Church (founded 1812) and Second Presbyterian Church (founded 1814). These early settlers were followed by other colonists from Delaware and Easton who arrived between 1820 and 1830. In 1837, John Milton bought 6 acres of land near present day Schoolhouse Road for $265. He named it Milton Township after himself and laid out a township plan that included a meeting house, schoolhouses, farmlands, roads and lots for sale. In 1840 he founded the first store in what is now Ephrata Township - The Milton Store - which still stands today. After being organized as a township on January 1st of 1861 under the new state Constitution of Pennsylvania, Milton Borough became an independent municipality on December 12th of that year when all township lands within Mellon Borough were annexed into that municipality boundary without any vote or referendum taking place. On October 15th of 1969 – following the merger of neighboring boroughs – Ephrata Township along with Milton Borough became one unit with a separate government entity known as “Ephratta Township” Incorporated Incorporation Number 3149’s Official Records reflect this change taking effect effective November 2nd1969; however business records continued to be kept until Maynard Jonson purchased the property/township office building located at 717 School House Road effective September 9th 2002 making it possible to keep all township records inside the same building statewide since then! On July 4th 1908 local farmers Adolf Pogue & Herman Mueller donated 5 tractors for use by postmasters throughout America during World War I & Postmaster General Charles Ladd authorized their delivery date August 16 th . Those tractors are still used today by mail carriers throughout America! Ephrata also experienced significant growth due to railroads coming through nearby Lancaster County including both Reading Railroad Company line running northeasterly from Yorktown Junction southwesterly past Coudersport through Blairmore Falls Depot eastward across Uprooting Creek Valley Station (now West Allis), thence via Monmouth Junction westward past New Hope Bridge Amusement Park northwesterly across Bigelow Creek Valley Station (now North Adams), thence continuing easterly as far as Scranton Railroad Company line running southwesterlly from Nanticoke Junction southwesterly past Uniondale Depot eastward across Blackwater Creek Valley Station northeastward into Lackawanna County; these railroad lines caused many factories located in central Lancaster County such as those around Hershey Heights such as Wernher Griggs' Chocolate Factory (1889), Fritsch's Brewery (1892), Thalheimer's Cheese Factory(1901) to move their production facilities out into rural areas closer to customers while also providing competition for local farmers markets which had become populardue in large part to prohibition efforts starting around 1920 By 1930 over 50% of Lancaster County's products came from outside its borders via railroads

Ephrata is a town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,812 at the 2000 census. It is the second most populous municipality in Lancaster County following Reading and it is adjacent to the city of Lancaster on the north side of the Susquehanna River. The first people to live in what is now Ephrata were Native Americans who hunted and gathered plants and animals near present-day Sunbury Township on the east side of the Susquehanna River before moving westward over time. The area was first called "Shawnee" after a nearby Shawnee village, which had been abandoned by their tribe as they migrated westward during this time. In 1784, surveyors started calling this area "Ephrata." A post office was established at Ephrata in 1814, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1825, John Smeal erected a gristmill on Walnut Creek just east of present-day Ephrata. This mill became one of many around this region that flourished due to its location close to water and access to markets for grain products being produced by farmers upstream from town along Walnut Creek. By 1830, there were over 20 mills operating in central and western Lancaster County; these mills supplied flour for local bread Loaves shops and other local businesses as well as providing employment for some 400 workers from rural areas across central and western PA. In 1829–30, William Potter built a sawmill on Catoctin Creek about six miles southwest of Ephrata; this mill became one of several larger operations around this region that continued to operate until 1904 when it closed because of low demand for lumber outside of Pennsylvanian cities like Philadelphia and Pittsburgh). In 1834–35, Potters rebuilt their mill on Catoctin Creek using designs submitted byactory engineer Samuel Morse; with new machinery they managed to produce lumber at an ever increasing rate while still keeping production costs down (the catenary system eventually replaced hand power). The mill operated until 1905 when it too closed due to lack of demand outside Pennsylvanian cities like Philadelphia and Pittsburgh). A store opened at the intersection of Sycamore Road (now Market Street) and Indianola Road (now Northumberland Avenue) northeast corner lot near First Baptist Church circa 1850s which became known as “The General Store” or simply “The General” after its proprietor/manager John Brougham purchased land from Abraham Lincoln sometime between 1850s-1860s who also ran a bakery next door adjacent thereto serving up hot dogs – precursor modern day Atchison Topeka Avenue landmark restaurant today! During Reconstruction following America's Civil War (1861-1865), many Confederate veterans returned home from fighting abroadorr families seeking economic opportunity began Trusting Mill #1 (later renamed Hope Mills) Opened Here 1861 - Became One Beltwide Clothing Manufacturers & Retailers 1865 - Operated For Many Years Being Known As “Hope Mills” Union Loyalists Grew Old Neighborhood And Named Their Home: Squirrel Hill
