Ephrata is a town in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Reading Township statistical area. The first European settlers in what is now Ephrata were Baptist missionaries from South Carolina who arrived in 1795 and established a small farm called "Bible Place". In 1805, John James Audubon (1785-1851) moved to Ephrata with his family from Savannah, Georgia and began collecting birds and studying their habits. He donated many of his specimens to the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. In 1821, John Beecham sold land that would become the town of Ephrata on the Susquehanna River to three brothers: George Washington Beecham (1801-1872), John Beecham (1802-1873), and Amos Eaton (1800-1877). The town was named for George Washington's daughter Elizabeth Hance (1796-1847). The first store was built in 1825 by Elias Howe. The post office was established in 1829, and became known as "Ephratta." A sawmill was built by Solomon Northrop around 1830; it failed within a few years because of low demand for wood products from nearby towns such as Lancaster and Reading. A flour mill followed soon after but also failed due to competition from other mills in neighboring towns. There were several attempts at building a railroad through Ephraimtat during this time; however no railway ever reached the town. In 1850, Elijah Holmes opened an hotel called "The Alms House" which remained open until 1955 when it burned down due to neglect by its owner.
