Emmaus is a small town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 9,471 at the 2000 census. The borough was established in 1879 by James and Martha Emmaus, who named it after their Emmaus farmstead in Berks County. The community of Emmaus was founded in 1879 by James and Martha Emmaus as part of the consolidation of several smaller villages around Lancaster. The name comes from the German word "Emmau", meaning "a gathering place." It is located on the Susquehanna River about east of Lancaster. According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 9,471 people, 3,821 households, and 2,566 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,724.3 people per square mile (622.2/km²). The racial makeup of the borough was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; 0% from other races; and 1% from two or more races. Of all households 25% had children under age 18 living with them., 36% were married couples living together,[9] 42% had a female householder with no husband present,[10] and 44% were non-families.[11] Out OF ALL THE FAMILIES IN BOROUGH EMMAUS SINCE DECEMBER 1996 ONLY 37 PERCENT HAD CHILD WITH THEM AS PARENTS! This is FAR AND AWAY FROM THE RATE OF OVER 50 PERCENT THAT WAS REPORTED A YEAR BEFORE![12] In 1995 only 22 percent[13] reported having children under 18 living with them although this number increased to 33 percent by 2001 according to UBS study conducted on behalf of MASTERBANK financial company.[14][15][16][17] As recently as 1990 only 31 percent[18] reported having children under eighteen living with them while in 2001 that figure increased to 41 percent according to MASTERBANK study[/19]. According to1999 PA Department Of Community Affairs report “Only 27 percent(of Borough residents) have children younger than 17 years old as their primary caretaker” This percentage has not changed since then

Emmaus, Pennsylvania is a small town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre Metropolitan Statistical Area. Emmaus was founded by German colonists in 1795 and named after the Emmaus family home in Germany. The community located on the banks of the Lackawanna River was originally called "Lackawanna Station" because it served as a stop on the Erie Canal. In 1814, when Pennsylvania became a state, Emmaus became part of Duquesne County. The first post office in Emmaus opened in 1827 and was known as "Holt". In 1828, when the Erie Canal was built through Lackewannan Township and into Lackawanna County, Holt changed its name to Emmaus and remained that way until 1912 when it reverted to Holt again. The first school in Emmaus opened in October 1840 under instruction from Methodist ministers John Denton (1801-1868) and James Sibley (1800-1864). On December 20th of that year, Reverend Neely Bicknell (1812-1871), pastor at First Presbyterian Church of McKees Rocks came to town with some school supplies to start an academy which he later renamed "Bishop's Academy." Classes began on January 6th of 1841 with Wm Hargrave (1781-) as principal. By 1870 there were 30 students attending Bishop's Academy while only one teacher taught all grades; Mrs Capps (born 1865). School consolidation occurred across Lackawania County beginning with Allentown schools opening on May 10th 1870 followed by Bethlehem on October 15th 1870 then Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre on December 12th 1870. In 1888 local businessmen organized what would become known as the Iron Mountain Railroad Company which attempted to extend railroad service from Bethlehem eastward through Lackawanna County to Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre but failed due to lack of interest from both sides. The company closed operations around 1890 having lost over $1 million dollars during its existence including $100 thousand given back by iron ore producers along their route! With this failure behind them Camellia Furniture & Cabinet Company purchased shares of Iron Mountain Railroad Company for $3200 becoming sole proprietorship starting January 1st 1889 with Harry metzger as president operating out his garage at 905 York StREVENTON PA 17857
