The Emmaus Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1892 by Dr. James Kelly and his son, John. The club was originally located on the west side of Emmaus and began using the name "Branch" in 1895. The club moved to its current location on Elm Street in 1902. In 1916, the club changed its name to the "Emmaus Rifle & Pistol Club." In 1924, the club changed its colors from light blue and white to black and green. The club changed its name again in 1951 to the "Emmaus Rifle & Pistol Club." In 2003, the club changed its motto to "United We Stand."
Emmaus is a small town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. Emmaus is located about 20 miles northwest of Lancaster and 30 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. It is bordered by Uniontown to the north, Johnstown to the east, and Beech Township to the south. The first permanent settlers in what is now Emmaus were two families who came from Scranton, Pennsylvania in 1821. They named their new community after Jesus Christ's family: His mother and father were named Emmaeus and Mary Magdalene respectively. After a few years of gradual growth, the village of Emmaus formally incorporation as a government township on December 12, 1825. A post office was established at Emmaus on January 1, 1826; it remained operative until its closure in 1928. During the American Revolution (1775-83), many residents fought for British General George Washington during his campaign against Lord Cornwallis. Many local homes served as headquarters for Patriot forces throughout that conflict. In 1786, when Benjamin Rush became governor of Pennsylvania and visited Emmaus for some time before leaving for Philadelphia to become Ulysses S Grant's secretary of state, he made a speech denouncing slavery in America as "the most degrading form that Providence could have put upon man." This event helped spur efforts among some residents to start an abolitionist society soon afterwards – activity which would continue until well into the 19th century (pamphlets published during this time can still be found around town). In 1836–37 local resident James Fenton organized a group called "Friends" with the goal of converting all slaves living within 3 miles radius into free citizens through education and religious preaching—an effort dubbed "Emancipation Day." The Friends Meeting House still stands today within walking distance of most businesses in town center; inside are displays featuring historical photos and stories about early Emausians involved with Friends programming or activism over the years. After severalfailed attempts over ensuing years (including one led by then-Mayor David Smith), emancipation finally took place on May 8th 1870 when John Armstrong freed his enslaved brother Thomas Armstrong from his yard near present day Elmira Road just south of Main Street; following Armstrong's successful flight away from slaveryÎs clutches many other slaves followed suit throughout Lancaster County that year collectively known as The Great Migration.) In 1881, it became part of Carbon Township. The first store in Emmaus opened in 1792 and operated for six years until moved to nearby Newtown. A second store was built in 1800 but closed within two years due to low sales. In 1802, a subscription library was established with books from subscribers local and distant. In 1814, a millinery shop began operations here and continued through the late 19th century; it closed around 1920s. In 1824, the first schoolhouse was built here; it burned down in 1886 but was rebuilt soon afterwards. A new schoolhouse (and later gymnasium) were erected in 1898; this building still stands today as a museum open to the public. A post office called Emmaus was established at this location on October 14, 1792 by John Smith with Pemberton as his mailing address.. It served until December 12th 1861 when it changed to Newtown because of consolidation among Carbon township's post offices which had been happening since November 30th 1860 among other towns Jewelburg (to the south), Souderton (to the west), Bethlehem (to the north) etc..
