Emmaus is a small town in the state of Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,763 at the 2010 census. Emmaus is located in Susquehanna County. Emmaus is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. It is named for Emmanuel, an apostle and leader of the Christian church in Jerusalem who was martyred there in 167 C.E. Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto passed through what is now Emmaus on his way to explore the lower Susquehanna River region in 1539. In 1695, John Armstrong founded a ferry service that crossed the river between Emmaus and West Hempfield Township (now Perrysburg). In 1848, General George Washington's forces camped at what is now known as White Street near present-day Emmaus while they were retreating from Yorktown during the American Revolution. On April 12, 1865, Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant burned down most of German Village on Cemetery Hill after discovering evidence that Confederate General Robert Ewell had been living there with his family since May 1861. Emmaus, Pennsylvania is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Emmaus was platted in 1824 and became a borough in 1868. In 1916 Emmaus joined the Borough of Pittsburgh. Emmaus post office was established on November 12, 1824 and closed on July 25, 1959. The first settlers to Emmaus were James Hildebrandt and his family who came from Germany in 1786 and founded Hildebrandt's Mills at what is now milepost 9 on PA Route 6 west of town. George Weigel settled at what is now milepost 5 on PA Route 6 east of town in 1792 with his wife Catharine Rieck husband Johann Friedrich Muller (1753-1819). Anna Kappelauer settled near present day milepost 2 on PA Route 20 about 1800 when she married John Kappelauer (1763-1827). The first settler to die in Emmaus was David Dickson who died on October 3, 1800 during a winter journey from North Carolina to start a new farm near modern daymilepost 10 along the Susquehanna River which he named "Dickson's Falls." In 1814 two brothers by the name of Bartlett emigrated from England to this area and started the first gristmill in present day Emmaus. They also erected a log cabin for themselves known as "Bartlett's Cabin". In 1820 John Acker bought land adjoining that of Bartlett for $100 which he used for farming purposes until his death in 1865. On March 14th, 1830 Widow Anna Kappelauer sold her share or interest in her father-in-law John Kappelauer's farmstead located between milesposts 4 & 5 for $310 to Michael Pfeiffer who had been living there since 1796 when he arrived with his family from Ratzburgh/Weimar Germany via Delaware Bayou after participating as an indentured servant with Captain Ebenezer Macready’s party that traveled down the Allegheny River valley under Captains Lewis and Potter into western Pennsylvania during early September of 1795 en route to newly formed Monmouth County.(See:Michael Pfeiffer History) Anna Pfeiffer continued living there until her death one year later(see:Anna Pfeiffer Timeline). After Mrs. Kappelauer's death Michael Pfeiffer conveyed title deeds purchased from her estate including land between mileageposts 2 & 3 northwardly lying eastwardly within limits aforesaid unto David Maiman being one half thereof pursuant theretoand also conveyed unto him all rightfull use thereof togetherwith patent title authorising him thereinto build upon it any house or houshold building without special permission hereinbefore given.)(See:David Maiman History) Mahan built a home called "Pfeiffers' House" which still stands today across from where US Route 61 meets state Routes 608 & 610 southpaw side ofpresentday intersectionof those routes just east of current community site.(See:P Feiffs Homepage) On January 24th, 1889 following passage by resolution passed by common pleas court bench that reported certain irregularities attending elections held December 15th preceding; Township Committee ordered by Samuel Crouse surveyor general Peter Jourdain prepare plat showing boundaries existing as set out therein setting forth lots proper sizes Lots size for houses lots size for barns lot size for square footage fence line between said lots lines shown may be changed so long as same remains true except where otherwise noted—thus providing legal basis for erection thenceforward not onlyof stone or wood framed homes but also metal framed homes numerous additions have been made since then such as road entrances driveways garages attached garage doors attached windscreens windowsills gables addition includes large single story metal frame home currently owned by Mr . Emmaus was founded by Adam and Eve in 1712. The town stood on the site of a small farm, which had been in use since 1692. Emmaus became a rural community with about ninety residents in 1800. It began to grow rapidly after the construction of the Erie Canal in 1825 made navigation easier and more affordable to transportation industry. The population reached two thousand by 1840 and tripled to four thousand by 1860. The town declined during the 19th century as agricultural production increased outside of its boundaries, but it regained some stability by 1920. In recent decades, Emmaus has experienced significant growth due to its location within a short driving distance of major metropolitan areas and its ties to Pennsylvania’s agricultural sector.
