In 1811, Emmaus became the home of Theological Seminary of Philadelphia. In 1868-69, Emmaus became known as the "Village of Gethsemane" due to nearby Mount Gethsemane where Jesus was crucified. In 1899-1900, Emmaus had its first post office and changed its name to Emmaus after four sisters who donated money for that purpose. Today's community is home to a variety of businesses including two banks (the First National Bank and Yorkville Savings bank), several churches (St James Episcopal Church and Christ Episcopal Church are both parish churches), a public library which opened in 1978, two restaurants/bars/cafés (Brewster's Bistro and Kane's Pub), three convenience stores (Kane's Pub & Grille, Fidelity Mart and Woolworths Drugstore), two schools - one elementary school serving grades K-5 and one middle school serving grades 6-8 - as well as more than 20 residences including six single family homes and twelve multi-family homes. There are also five businesses that offer retail services such as general store; beauty salon; dry cleaner; confectionery store; tire shop; automotive repair shop; grocery store; etc., plus an auto parts store. One stream running through the heart of the town is called Horseshoe Creek while another runs through it called Cedar Run which joins together just north of town on Highway 722 near convergence with Indian Creek Road

Kapp as its first mail clerk. In 1865, Emmaus became part of Allegheny County and changed its name to "Emmaus Township." In 1889 it became one of seventeen townships within Butler County when it was created from parts of Adams and Jefferson townships. On July 1, 1912, Emmaus voted to become a city under the new charter granted by Pennsylvania Governor John Hay Jr.. On December 12th 1915 Mayor James Joyal announced that due to high population growth rates in neighboring Duquesne City which had experienced an influx of Polish Americans during World War I (1914-18), Emmaus would be annexingDuquesne City on January 1st 1916 beginning with all male citizens over eighteen years old living within walls Municipality while females could remain residents only if they married men eighteen years or older; unmarried women were required to leave for two years without her consent after which she could rejoin society The annexation caused much controversy as many people felt that having a city would increase taxes while diminishing services such as police protection while also cutting off access to education opportunities for rural residents who depended on agricultural produce being transported into downtown Duquesne for markets On November 17th 1916 Mayor James Joyal announced that due to high population growth rates in neighboring Scranton City which had experienced an influx of Italian Americans during World War II (1939-1945), Emmaus would be annexingScranton City on January 1st 1917 beginning with all female citizens over eighteen years old living within walls Municipality while Males could remain Residents only if they married Men eighteen years or older; unmarried women were required to leave for two years without her consent after which she could rejoin society The annexation caused much controversy as many people felt that having a city would increase taxes while diminishing services such as police protection while also cutting off access to education opportunities for rural residents who depended on agricultural produce being transported into downtown Scranton for markets
