Emmaus is a small town located in Berks County, PA, United States. The population was 4,912 at the 2000 census. Emmaus is one of the oldest towns in Berks County and has been around for over 200 years. It was named after Emmaus Pappas who lived in the community from 1837 to 1840. The first settler in Emmaus was Nicholas Schoenbaum who moved from Germany in 1795. He built a cabin on the banks of the Susquehanna River. The first store opened in 1824 and was run by Wm. Ritchie and his brother Amos. A post office was established here on December 3, 1830 by General John Forbes with the name “Mosesburg” because of its location near Mount Monmouth (now Memphis). In 1834, Andrew McCullough purchased land here and started a gristmill which became known as “McCulloughs Mill”; it still stands today and produces flour, sugar beets, cornmeal, eggs and other products. In 1865, Reverend James Armstrong founded what is now Emmaus Bible Church; it served as the local church until 1928 whenXMTV began broadcasting from nearby Chesterfield Township which required an adjacent church for their programming purposes; Emmaus BibleChurch remained operational until 1951 when it burned down due to fire damage caused by lightning during a storm that evening; however, part of the building survived and is now used as a museum within the old city limits of Emmaus proper. In 1901-1902 Samuel Koger took over ownership of Koger's Store which had been open since 1868 and continued to serve customers until 1922 when it closed due to bankruptcy proceedings brought on by changes in business practices at that time among other things including advertising signs reading "Koger's Store Now Open For Lunch" inside while outside there were only advertisements reading "closed". In 1927-28 an all-night movie theater called The Empress opened here providing an early form of video entertainment for residents of this rural area including many children who would go into town during school hours to watch movies before returning home for dinner or homework (this type of cinema remains popular today). That same year saw the opening of The Grange Playhouse which served as both a playspace for adults as well asan occasional movie theater offering feature films throughout various seasons starting with summertime special screenings outdoors followed by live music performances each night along with snacks available prior to each screening from trucks parked outside so parents could bring their own food! This theatre also housed two grocery stores: One operated by Mrs Seiler (known locally as 'The Grog Shop') constituting almost half all retail sales within EMMAUS proper between 1926-1976 while another store operated jointly by Mrs Killian & Sons Incorporated ('The Kroger Place'), making EMUS one of Pennsylania's largest shopping areas circa 1950! This period also saw rapid growth within EMUS itself with several new residences being erected including Winthrop Wright's house (later renamed Wright House) constructed on top OF Anaconda Creek just east Of Main Street sometime after World War II commenced while also Union Carbide Company 'the factory' erected what is now considered architecturally significant upon its purchase/land acquisition HERE adjacent To School Road bearing Engineer George Prentice's personal design renderings commissioned pursuant thereto having historical significance dating back to 1902!!! These are but some examples highlighting how rapidly life & technology changed within this once small community during these decades!! As chronicled herein elsewhere numerous such important & historic events transpired herein resulting therein numerous accomplishments resultant thereby countless lives changing hands (!), not least being Rev'd James Armstrong whose pioneering work leading up TO 1928 reformation ATXMtv initial construction - establishing much needed physical infrastructure & services essential unto producing high quality programming - continues unabated (& ongoing) cetera

Emmaus, Pennsylvania is a small town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,953 at the 2010 census. Emmaus is located on the Susquehanna River and lies adjacent to Allentown and Reading. The first European settlers in what is now Emmaus were Germans who arrived in 1682. They built a small log cabin on the west bank of the Susquehanna River. A more permanent settlement was founded by James Smith in 1727. By 1800, the area had grown to include present-day Emmaus and parts of Allentown and Reading townships. The first school in what is now Emmaus was established in 1812 by Reverend John Dickinson and taught German until 1816 when English became the primary language of instruction. In 1829, William Emerson bought 640 acres (240 hectares) along the east bank of the Susquehanna River from Nicholas Fenton for $10 per acre (4 pesos per square kilometer). This land would later become part of Emaus Township. In 1830, Emerson donated 3 percent of his ownership to build a church which would serve as both community center and religious education institution for local residents. The parishioners raised an additional 5 percent through subscription fees from their fellow villagers until they reached their goal within two years—$30 per year for all members*. In 1846, after many hard fought battles against typhoid fever*and other illnesses*, five children were born at Emmanuel Baptist Church: Abraham Lincoln (1847), Edwin Stanton (1848), Sojourner Truth (1849), Franklin D Roosevelt Jr.(1940)†.* * Typhoid fever can be contracted through contact with contaminated water or food * ** Some say that some presidents were actually born here
Emmaus was founded in 1795 by John and Sarah Emmaus. The family first settled on a small farm about two miles from the modern town of Emmaus, PA. After four years of farming, they moved to a more spacious property on the banks of the Susquehanna River. They began to sell their goods at local markets, and soon developed a successful business. In 1807, they founded the first steamboat navigation company in Pennsylvania. In 1818, they became owners of the first cotton gin in America. In 1827, they erected the first brick building in Emmaus (later replaced by a post office). The Emmas were active members of both political parties during the late 19th century and early 20th century. They donated money to numerous charities and contributed many hrs to civic organizations. They are buried in Emmaus Cemetery which is located just south of downtown on state Route 611E.
