Emmaus is located on the banks of the Allegheny River and has a mix of traditional German architecture with American-style homes since it was founded by Germans in 1815. The town was known for its linden (a type of oak) trees which were used to make items like hats and baskets. Emmaus had a post office from 1824 until 1865, when it moved to nearby Monroeville. The first settlers in Emmaus were Germans who arrived around 1800 as part of a large group that sailed from Hamburg, Germany on the "Blücher" ship. They built log cabins and started to cultivate maize, potatoes, wheat and other crops. In 1825 Anna Uhlenbeck opened her own grocery store in downtown Emmaus after moving from Indianapolis, Indiana; this store would become well-known throughout western Pennsylvania for its quality groceries and baked goods. One early settler's daughter wrote about her experiences living in Emmaus: "In those days we did not know steamboats or railways so we went out every day on our barge laden with goods upriver". By 1830 most of the German colonists had departed for good but some remained behind to start new families while others took up agriculture again Nearby Monroeville became known as "the dumping ground" because more than half of all produce brought into Emaus by farmers ended up there before being sold or given away to other residents or shipped off to markets across America over subsequent years." After years of growth and development within their small community the people of Emmaus decided that an high school was necessary so they erected one between 1840-1845 under guidance from Rev John Pogue an educator who served as superintendent at Sewickley Academy near Pittsburgh . A brick building now stands next door to Pogue's former school house which still serves as a museum educationally speaking dedicated to his legacy After several years without any formal educational institutions available nearby communities such as Sewickley established grammar schools providing instruction through grades twelve through fifteen beginning simultaneously including girls although girls only entered into attendance at Samuel Proctor High School following state law passed following passage of Assembly Bill No 1 Of 1902 which provided for this change . On January 3rd 1907 when newly elected President Theodore Roosevelt issued Executive Order 11246 making formal via Presidential proclamation etching into stone on one side “Emmas Public School District” opposite existing Reading High School having classes commence September 15th 1907 under Superintendent Fenton Waddell’s direction” this marked commencement officialization for Ladies Day festivities annually celebrated by ladies leaders/teachers associated with school district consisting largely & ladies pupils themselves Cookman Mfg Co Youngstown made Hotel serving breakfast daily thru Decembr Dlvormnt 1917 Mr Fenton Waddell Superintendent
Emmaus is a small town in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. Emmaus is located in the Susquehanna River valley and is bordered by Reading on the east, Emmaus Township on the west, and Huntingdon on the north. The name "Emmaus" comes from Hebrew אמירה (Amirah), meaning "a fruitful place". It was first settled by German settlers in 1795. The name was changed to Emmaus after a death in 1824. In 1865, part of what is now Huntingdon Township was annexed into Emmaus; this annexation created a new borough form of government for Emmaus which continued until 1978 when it became an unincorporated community again. In 1898, construction began on what would become Summit Hill Schoolhouse and eventually served as the town's high school for over fifty years until it closed in 2006. The building still stands today and is used as a storage shed for local businesses. On July 2nd, 2009 businessman Charles Simons donated land to make way for a new shopping mall near his old business plant called "Simons' Place". This project failed to gain much attention but did bring some much needed development to nearby areas such as Huntingdon Township which had been struggling without any retail outlets since vandals destroyed several stores there in 2006. However some people were upset about how this development would impact their neighborhoods while others were excited about finally having something close by that could help spur economic growth within their township
