The town was founded in 1827 by John Dutton and his family as a farmstead on land that now includes Emmaus Township. In 1851, local gunsmiths Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail established a manufacturing operations here to supply firearms to farmers throughout the region. Emmaus is located on the Susquehanna River, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Philadelphia and 8 miles (12 km) north of Lancaster. During World War II many American citizens living in nearby Readingtown evacuated to Emaus because of bombings by German forces during World War II; however no bomb damage or fatalities occurred in Emaus as a result of these bombings. It also has been noted that there are few physical reminders remaining from those times as most people left quickly afterwarting World War II ended; only a few homes still stand today unchanged from when they were built during that time period- one being a three-story brick building built shortly before 1945 that serves as a museum housing artifacts related to Emaus’ history including pioneer days through post-WWII boom years The community received national attention following allegations made against then Pennsylvanian Governor Ed Rendell regarding his possible connections to organized crime while he served as state treasurer between 1991 and 1993—a period during which Rendell was targeted by then First Deputy Attorney General Dick Thornburgh for investigation into corruption within his administration characterized by Republican Party insiders as “the dirty dozen:” political cronies who contributed more than $100K each to Thornburgh’s campaign coffers—virtually all of which took place while Rendell chaired state government’s ethics commission but failed to face any prosecutions despite wide public knowledge of their wrongdoing . After months long review process led by then Inspector General John Doe III under section 7805(c)(2)of THE PA CODE -QUALIFIED PUBLIC OFFICER ACT OF 1998—nearly every individual mentioned above except for Daschle had already pled guilty or reached settlements prior to announcement of Special Prosecutor Lewinsky Probe into Federal Programs funded with Taxpayer Money ; therefore there is little chance they will be able to continue playing any role whatsoever in State Government until such time as charges are brought against them under Pa Code §7805(c)(2).
