Emmaus is a small town in Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 5,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Emmaus-Allegany County Borough. The name "Emmaus" comes from the biblical Hebrew word menahem (מנהל), meaning "the place where Elijah went to prayer." The name may also be derived from a location near Bethlehem called Emmaus because there were many emigrants who came to America via that route during the early 1800s. The first settlers in what is now Emmaus were Quakers who arrived around 1750. They built a meeting house and school on the land that would later become Emaus Township. In 1812, they erected a log cabin on the north side of Route 12 east of Poynton after meeting there with other settlers fleeing religious persecution in England. They named their settlement Emmaus in honor of their benefactor, George Washington! In 1827, John Darnielle founded Darnielle Brothers Brewery which became one of the most famous breweries in America. After Prohibition ended in 1933, his brewery produced some of the first aluminum cans and made Emmaus one of its main production areas; it still produces beer today. 1/5/2018

Emmaus, Pennsylvania is a small town in Monroe County, Pennsylvania and is the location of the Emmaus Baptist Church. The church was founded in 1795 by Reverend Ebenezer Emmons and was named for his daughter Emma. In 1829, it moved to its present location on Main Street. The first pastor at Emmaus Baptist Church was Rev. Samuel Atherton. Reverend Atherton served from 1828-1847 and built the first meeting house in Emmaus. Reverend John Sibley preached at Emmaus from 1851-1857 and renovated the meeting house which now serves as the church's main sanctuary. Reverend Charles Goodspeed served as pastor at Emmaus from 1861-1871 before he passed away in 1865. Reverend George Jarrell then took over as pastor until his death in 1895. During Rev Jarrell's time, the congregation erected a number of buildings including a schoolhouse, barns, a greenhouses, and a menagerie center which still stands today on Main Street in front of the church. In 1916, Rev Jarrell's parishioners voted to change their name to Emmanuel Episcopal Zion Church after becoming affiliated with that denomination's national organization called "The Episcopal Zion Mission." After changing their name again to Emmanuel Episcopal Zion Church in 1925 following World War I hostilities between America and Great Britain (the original name of the congregation), they completed construction of their current building on Main Street which opened its doors to members on October 25th 1928. From 1925-1941 (the years during which Emmanuel Episcopal ZionChurch operated under both names), Rev Ephraim Cook served as pastor at Emmaus before he became rector of Stroudsburg Bible College where he remained until his death in 1987. Following Mr Cook’s retirementorship there were several interim pastors who filled various roles up until Rev James Whetstone assumed charge as permanent Pastor on January 1st 1991 when he began officiating at Emmanuel Episcopal ZionChurch throughout All Hallows' Day services beginning November 5th each year since then! Born into an evangelical family located near Lancaster County’s largest city – Philadelphia –Rev James Whetstone attended Trinity Evangelical Divinity School before ordaining himself an Elder within The United Methodist Church in 1979 after serving an internship at Christ’s Chapel AME Tabernacle near Philadelphia PA..
