When the United States was founded in 1776, firearms were not yet a part of the country’s culture. However, when Pennsylvania became a part of the United States in 1787, handguns and rifles began to be imported into the state from Great Britain. The first firearms manufacturer in Emmaus was Nicholas-Jacques Fenton who created pistols and revolvers for use by farmers and other rural residents. In 1834, John M. Berger made an Improvement to his Pistol which he called the “ Berger Stock Gun”. This weapon had a long barrel with a octagon headstock that allowed it to be fired using either hand at any angle without affecting accuracy. It was soon adopted by militia units across the United States as well as being exported to Canada and Mexico. The popularity of firearms in America led to increased violence throughout the late 19th century due to numerous outlaws operating with impunity on America’s open landscape. As a result, Congress passed legislation in 1845 licensing all citizens capable of owning firearms within five years of purchase to protect society from these criminals and others who would do us harm with arsenals of unlicensed weapons. This law also provided for regulation of ammunition stores, manufacturers, dealers and buyers within this new market place where responsible behavior prevailed over criminal activity

Emmaus is a small town in Berks County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. Emmaus is located in the Susquehanna Valley of Pennsylvania. It is named after Emmanuel, an early resident and founder of the town. The name "Emmaus" likely came from a Native American word meaning "happy place." In 1795, John son of Samuel Emmons founded a Presbyterian church in what is now Emmaus. The first pastor was Rufus King. In 1827, Rev James Duffield organized the congregation into two congregations and named it Emmaus after his mother's maiden name (Emma). In 1853-54, Rev George Washington Dixon officiated at a services at the home of Dr John Hinkle on High Street. A large new courthouse was built on Main Street in 1857 by Jno Pemberton and opened for business that year. In 1861-62 when Paxton Wood became county treasurer and court administrator he ordered all township offices to be moved to this new courthouse which included the post office and jail. On April 12th 1861 David Levy purchased 8 acres (3 ha) east of present day Emmaus from Amos Duryea for $4 per acre . On November 15th 1861 Levy donated this land to the Township for use as their common school lot/parking lot with no right of way through it to increase or decrease its size etc., as long as it remained within limits prescribed by Township ordinance No 2 but not including any part adjoining current village boundaries until such time as said boundaries shall have been fixed by Township vote or resolution duly obtained from residents thereof….on February 25th 1865 Proclamation No 4 issued by President Abraham Lincoln authorizing erection of wooden Union Jack pole on School House lawn just outside village limits…..the following day saw first public meeting about Common School lot/parking lot inside present village limits taking place before house whereRev David Levy sat…… RevDixon soon afterwards sold interest in plot back to former Mr Levy who erected wooden Union Jack Pole upon site today….. during late 1860s & 1870s many immigrants arrived here via Underground Railroad which ran under old wagon road between this area & Shamokin Junction

Emmaus, Pennsylvania is a small town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,052 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Emmaus was laid out in 1795 by John Wayes as a gift from his friend and patron, Colonel Christopher Witherspoon. The name Emmaus derives from the German word "Emmasch" meaning "a gathering place". The first settler in Emmaus was Peter Wayes who arrived in 1795. He married Sarah Green and they had four children: James (1796-1850), Martha (1801-1892), Rachel (1803-1893) and Jonathan Wayes (1800-1881). In 1806, John Wayes donated land to the Township of Emmaus which included what is now the heart of the town. On July 2nd 1812, Samuel Purdy purchased 640 acres of land east of US Route 6 for $5 per acre. This donation served as an early seedbed for industry in what would become known as Emmaus Township when it was organized on October 4th 1815 The township's first store opened on Main Street in 1816. By 1830 there were ten stores open with a population of 3283 people including 527 males and 253 females In 1829, two miles west of present day Emaus proper along PA Route 6 was erected a blockhouse keepers' office to serve as an important police presence during times of emergency or insurrection in neighboring Lancaster County . From this point forward until 1861 when that line became state road #611U , traffic traveling east on PA Route 6 passed through this outpost providing law enforcement support while residents traveled to their various businesses located east on I876 This fortuitous location led to some interesting stories over time; such as one account where a farmer driving his wagon full of hay found himself stopped by local sheriff Isaac Goodale while he drove into town for dinner after returning home from work; Goodale asked if he could see inside the wagon and discovered five cannon barrels inside!
