Emmaus, PA is a town in Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,527 at the 2010 census. The name Emmaus comes from the German word "Emmas" meaning "a little farmstead". The town was founded by Presbyterians in 1795 on land that had been part of the proprietary colony of Huntingdon. It became a borough in 1824 and then a village in 1828. In 1830 it became an incorporated town. The first post office was established in 1829. The mainstay of the community until after World War II were its churches and religious services which attracted many people from nearby Scranton-Wilkes-Barre for services and worshiping during war years when both towns were at full wartime production capacity. These days, however, Emmaus is notable for its thriving shopping district which includes several popular stores including Kmart and Sears; as well as two large banks ( First National Bank and Citizens Bank); three restaurants; two bars; one convenience store; ten businesses totaling 147 acres (59 hectares) of commercial space; twelve homes (of which six are owner-occupied); four schools: four elementary school grades plus one middle/junior high school class size combined (the last being consolidated into a new high school this fall), three private academies for children aged 8-12th gradeinderies with accompanying adult education classes— each with multiple classrooms, gymnasiums/spaces for music rehearsal/performance or dance instruction; one business park with more than fifty truckloads of equipment tenant sideshow events annually - such as car shows donated by local manufacturers to support local industry.; numerous agricultural operations - including fruit trees grown year round on thirty acres (12 hectares) of land leased from Lackawanna County government specialising in raising chickens for eggs and other purposes.; three dairy farms providing milk for about seventyfive hundred customers per day.; four grain mills providing flour, feed grains and other products to area farmers;; fifteen hobnailseries open seven days per week yielding up to five hundred pounds (.235 metric tons) of nails each

Emmaus, Pennsylvania is a small town located in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The population was 9,722 at the 2010 census. Emmaus is one of the oldest villages in Lancaster County and dates back to 1785 when it was part of the Susquehanna Township. The first settler in Emmaus was George Washington who arrived in 1785. He built a log cabin here and named it Mount Vernon after his mansion on Virginia's Potomac River. In 1814, President James K. Polk sent his troops here during the war with Mexico to relieve the citizens of Pittsburgh which had been besieged by Mexican forces for three months or more. TheMexican soldiers burned down many homes and killed many people including some of Polk's family members while they were being held captive at Fort Pitt near present-day Emmaus. In 1840, John Winchester settled here with his wife Martha and their six children from England. They opened a store and started trading goods with other settlers in nearby towns such as Clearfield, Slippery Rock, West Chester and Easton before moving to what is now Emmaus in 1845 to establish their own town site that would include all of what is now Lancaster County except for parts of Reading Township east of Emmaus Creek (now called Monongahela). In 1850 they opened another store, this time on High Street which became home to most of the early business activity in “the little village” as it came to be known; until about 1870 when large tract stores began opening up along US 15 north/south just outside its boundaries making it difficult for residents from within “the village” even to reach their businessesitiatives without leaving their homes overnight! During World War II much activity took place at Two Rivers Ammunition Plant northeast of town; however most villagers escaped injury or damage due primarily because Three Rivers Ammunition Plant south/west of town remained open all day long! As late as 1970 local residents could still be found working there shifts! Today there are few if any shops remaining open within “the little village” itself but plenty going on elsewhere including: several churches (St Paul's United Methodist Church building once used as a schoolhouse), two schools (Lancaster Valley Community School & First Presbyterian Church), an agricultural museum (made possible by donations from area farmers), several private residences (including one donated byEmmaus mayor Ed McMahon) – as well as numerous smaller businesses providing services such as plumbing, lawn care etc.; making Emmaus an important center for both community life and economic development throughout central Lancaster County today!

The first Europeans to visit what is now Emmaus were Dutch settlers in 1682. In 1718, a group of Irish Travellers settled here and began the process of assimilating into American society. In 1847, the Reading Railroad ended its line through Emmaus and started traveling northwest instead. This caused a great deal of development in the town as businesses moved in from across Lehigh County to take advantage of the new railroad connection. In 1907, Emmaus became home to one of the first banks in Lehigh County when The Citizens National Bank opened its doors at 500 Main Street. Over time, other banks followed suit and today there are six banking institutions operating in Emmaus- four credit unions (JPMorgan Chase & Co., First National Bank & Trust Company, Fifth Third Bank), one savings bank (Municipal Savings Bank), three insurance companies (Allstate Insurance Company, State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company, Geico reinsurance company) and two health care services companies (Aetna Health Care Inc., Allegheny General Hospital). After years of growth and development within the community Southeastern PA Coal Corporation made an announcement that it would be closing its coal mine near Middletown due to low prices for coal following the global financial crisis; this had a significant impact on local businesses which closed their doors all across Lehigh County as well as eastern Pennsylvania including Emmaus because jobs outside of town were no longer available. This left many people without work or income which impacted both individual households as well as small businesses who depended on mining revenue for support
