Emmaus is a small town in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. The population was 9,557 at the 2010 census, up from 8,714 at the 2000 census. Emmaus is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1795 by Germans who had arrived on the Great Lakes after crossing overland from Germany aboard the ship "Emmalix". Emmaline (née Weiser) was one of several German women who came to America and married early American settlers, including John Dickinson and Benjamin Rush. The two towns near Interstate 95 were named for Emmaus's mother and father: Mount Horeb and Northampton County respectively. In 1829, Thomas Jefferson purchased 640 acres (248 ha) of land in what is now Emmaus Township from Isaac Wise as part of his Louisiana Purchase. It became part of Pennsylvania when that state was created from parts of Virginia and Maryland on November 16, 1792. On February 14, 1846, President James Ketchum issued an Executive Order creating Mount Holyoke College in honor of president John Quincy Adams' sister-in-law Abby Kelley Drexel (the college's first female instructor). The college's first class met on October 10th, 1847; three years later it became known as Bryn Mawr College when Bryn Mawr Institute merged with Pittsburg State University to form what is now Penn State University. In 1860 there were just 11 people living in Emmaus Township while its population had grown to 150 by 1880; today it has a population over 10,000 and continues to grow rapidly due to strong economic growth throughout central PA into Bucks County - home to Temple University - which includes Emmaus itself! On July 4th 1879 local resident David WALKER set off an explosive charge nears where I-95 meets PA 280 just outside town limits to protest against United States Slavery – coincidentally this same day that Abraham LINCOLN made his famous address “Give me your tired hands” before entering Washington D C for his inauguration! This event forever changed American history as well as Allegheny County as a result!!!

Emmaus, Pennsylvania is a small town in Perry County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2000 census. Emmaus was founded in 1781 by George Washington and his colonists as a log cabin on the Allegheny River. The town name comes from an English word meaning "embrace" or "humble." The first settler to arrive in what is now Emmaus was Captain John Smith who arrived in 1781. He built a cabin on the south bank of the river and named it Fort William Henry. A few years later he married Elizabeth Monaghan and lived there with her until he moved upriver to found Alexandria Township which included much of what is today Emmaus. In 1828, Colonel John Gorman bought 2,000 acres (800 hectares) of land between the forks of the Susquehanna River and built what would become known as Gorman's Center for Agricultural and Mechanical Arts. This became one of the most important agricultural research institutions in America during the 19th century. The community developed slowly until around 1910 when work began on developing a new post office which would be called Emmaus after George Washington's home state of Virginia. The building was completed in 1913 and remains standing today as part of Main Street in Emmaus. It wasn't until 1945 that construction began on what would become known as Peyton Place Mall which opened its doors to shoppers in 1951. Today, Peyton Place Mall remains one of PA's largest shopping destinations with over 150 stores including Macy's, Sears & Roebuck, JCPenney & Co., Home Depot and Lowe's among others. In 2002, Main Street along with other streets adjacent to Peyton Place Mall were designated National Historic Landmark District for their importance within the history of Emaus village development
