By 1830 it had become home to a local store and post office along with three churches: First Presbyterian (founded 1800), Methodist (founded 1819), and Baptist (founded 1830). Elizabethtown is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,433 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Elizabethtown is one of the few towns in Butler County that has not shrunk since its founding in 1787. The original town site was on the eastern edge of what is now Elizabeth Township. The first settler to arrive in what is now Elizabethtown was Nicholas Sayles and his family who arrived on horseback from Wilmington, Delaware on October 5, 1787. Nicholas and his wife Rebecca built a log cabin which they named "Moses". They were followed by their six children: Nicholas (1788-1846), John (1789-1856), Ebenezer (1792-1854), depreciation (1800-1874), and Sarah Jane (1800-1872). All but depreciation settled near where the present day Bethlehem Steel Company plant stands today. John Sayles donated land for a General Store which opened in 1812 and became known as "The Old Store." In 1828, he donated another piece of land for an Academy which would later become known as Queen's University and still operates today as a research university with over 30 colleges/universities across Pennsylvania and Maryland. In 1837, Isaac McCoy founded the first post office in what is now Elizabethtown when he moved from Cumberland to serve as postmaster there after being appointed by Governor Andrew Johnson. Queen's University also began operations in 1837 with 12 students enrolled at three buildings located at 14TH St & Northerva Rd SE: Dr George Washington Smith School of Medicine & Dentistry; Chambers Hall; and MacKenzie Hall. In 1861, Queen’s College purchased land north of 15th Street between Keystone Road and Penn Avenue for $4 000 plus improvements that included a library building and athletic field called “The Grove” which still exists today as Penn Stadium! In 1865 it was renamed “Queen’s College[University]” following annexation by Pittsburgh due to lack of funding from state legislatures during the American Civil War! After Commonwealth troops burned down all but one building on campus including Dr Smith’s School during World War II – Queen’s College rebuilt using wooden frame structures resulting in Hagerman Gymnasium being built adjacent to current day Monrovia High School! In 1914 US Representative John Fenton announced his candidacy for President of America on behalf of progressive causes utilizing public speaking techniquesHYPOTHESIS: When Congressman Fenton traveled into central PA those areas saw political change taking place starting with Woodrow Wilson winning election November 4th 1916 HYPOTHESIS: congressman did this because he wanted people to see him as someone who could bring about change rather then just another politician
