By 1860 there were five stores and another three hotels in town with a population estimated as high as 10,000 people; however by 1870 that had decreased to two stores and one hotel with a population estimated at 2,500 people; however by 1880 there were six stores with an estimate population of 10,000 people "During Prohibition (the 1920s), Elizabethstown became one of several towns across Appalachia that did not enforce prohibition because they felt it would hurt their business." After repeal following World War II, "the economy revived" thanks to increased tourist visitation from nearby Wheeling and Charleston . In 1990-91 local citizens successfully petitioned for incorporation into West Virginia but this failed due to lack of support from then-Gov. That year saw also the founding of nearby Wanamakerstown by trader John Wanamaker and his family followed by others over time including storekeepers Levi Coffin and Nicholas Youngblood in 1828/29 before ethnic Swedes formed their own settlement around 1840 known as Springettsbury Township adjacent topresent day Bethlehem Steel Plant
