This battle marked the end of Spanish hegemony over East Indies (now Indonesia) because Portugal had become one of Spain's most important allies during this time period. Elizabethtown is a borough in York County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lancaster Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Elizabethtown were French traders and missionaries in 1702. A post office was established at Elizabethtown in 1753, but no mail passed through it until 1814 because of the Revolutionary War. On July 4, 1800, a small community called Canandaigua formed on the east side of present-day Elizabethtown following the burning of that town by British forces during the American Revolution. In 1815–1816, landowner David Humphreys donated 200 acres (80 km²) to build a town on the site of Canandaigua with three churches: one for Presbyterians, one for Baptists and one for Methodists. The town was named after Humphreys's daughter Eleanor and her husband John Nicholson (1756–1838), who had come overland from Scotland as a young man and built two hotels in Canandaigua before moving to Elizabethtown proper in 1819. In 1830, while still under construction, work began on what would become Erie Canal #2; when completed six years later it made Elizabethtown an important seaport with access to Philadelphia via Waterford Channel. In 1875–1876 industrialist James Buchanan Paine located his mills here; they became known as Paine's Mills after him. The mills closed in 1978 but their products are still produced here today by several companies including Bobrick Paper Company and Republic Steel Corporation. Today Elizabethstown is home to many cultural attractions such as its annual Lancaster Folk Festival which attracts over 100 exhibitors from around Pennsylvania; its own Carnegie Library which opened in 1902; and its annual Pumpkin Festival which celebrates all things pumpkin related since 1992. Additionally there are several restaurants and bars located throughout the borough including Bottle Creek BBQ & Brewery which has been open since 1984; The Depot restaurant chain started up here in 1998 by four local businessmen meeting at Butler’s Barbecue followed by various locations across York County until he sold them all off within five years! In 1792, Elizabethtown was founded as a small community in the area now known as Westmoreland County. In 1854, it became the capital of Pennsylvania. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Elizabethtown was one of the few towns to remain unoccupied by Union troops. After the war, Elizabethtown grew rapidly and became an important commercial center. The town's infrastructure was also put into place to support its growing population: a water system was built in 1881, and a Telephone Company was chartered in 1903. In 1967, Elizabethtown became part of Philadelphia.
