Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania is a town in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,839 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Huntingdon County. Elizabethtown was founded by George Washington in 1786 and named for his wife Elizabeth. The first stop on the Underground Railroad in America was located in Elizabethtown. Many of the early abolitionists and other dissidents who fled to Canada during the American Revolution lived and worked in Elizabethtown before moving on to Canada or deeper into concealment. In 1814, when Pittsford became part of Pennsylvania, Elizabethtown reverted back to its original name of George Washington's wife's hometown: ElizabethTownship (now Huntingdon Township). In 1851, however, it again changed its name to honor both Washington and his wife: Queenstown Township. In 1901 it again became Elizabethtown when all of Huntingdon County were merged into new Hunterdon County. As part of the efforts to preserve rural communities acrossPennsylvania following statehood in 1868, many small villages within Huntington and Somerset Counties were consolidated into larger towns throughout that decade-Queenstown being one such instance; but asatherineville remained an isolated community until after World War II when it also joined forces with neighboringElizabethtown in developing a large shopping center known as "The Mall". After years of decline due primarily to numerous economic problems including lack of development along with environmental degradation from over-collection through farming practices which caused severe flooding every year (the worst ever event here), The Mall closed down for good on October 15th 2009 after more than 30 years open operation; leaving only a few remaining stores inside what had once been one massive mall complex accounting for over two million square feet ; although some smaller businesses still occupy portions of former mall spaces today as retail spaces are not typically allowed within malls anymore due to concerns about fire risk from now defunct fireworks displays that used to take place inside) .
