In 1955, Elizabethtown voters passed an ordinance authorizing annexation by neighboring Clearfield Township; this annexation caused much concern among residents because it would have left them without a government provider should their township be dissolved by order of the state legislature under then-Gov. Robert Ehrlich Sr.. In recent years, however, many residents have voiced support for annexing Elizabethtown into Clearfield because it would offer more services such as schools and infrastructure improvements than what could be provided by neighboring municipalities alone. At 1 853 people according to 2010 Census Estimates,[1]Elizabethtown ranks third largest municipality in Butler County after Grafton Township with 2 593[2] inhabitants[3], whileClearfield has over 4 000 inhabitants making it Number One.[4][5][6]As per 2000 Census figures,[7]approximately eighty percent[8][9][10][11]of all individuals living within either township lived within their respective wards established therein before January 1st 2009:[12]. The fortifications became an important part of American strategy during the Mexican-American War because they prevented Mexican forces from invading western Pennsylvania and seizing valuable land for Mexico. During World War I, the town played a key role in supplying ammunition for American troops fighting on both sides of the war. In 1917, efforts began to build a new airport within Elizabethtown but these plans went ahead only after Congress granted federal funding for airport construction through legislation called Airport Act No. 2 (Pt 67).
