Elizabethtown is a small town in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Harrisburg-Carlisle-York metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Elizabethtown were the French on July 10, 1682 and their Indian guide, La Salle. The French built Fort Duquesne in 1755 and became the occupants of what is now Elizabethtown. In 1837, parts of Huntingdon and Northumberland counties were combined to form Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. As a result of this merger, Elizabethtown lost its status as a county seat but it continued to serve as an important community for many years until it was discontinued by Act 2 of 1938 which merged all of Huntingdon County into the new Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. According to tradition, one OFarrell (John Farr) donated land for a courthouse in 1836 and another donated money for school construction that same year. In 1877 John Ahern opened his general store on Main Street in Elizabethtown which became one of the most popular stores in town with its wide variety of merchandise. In 1899 Phebe Hahn opened her home on Second Street serving as a hospital during World War I and later becoming known as "the grandmother"of the town's citizens due to her influence on local politics and culture within the community she helped create. The post office operated from February 15th, 1865 until November 30th 1935; however mail service ceased when Pennsylvanian Telephone Company bought Postmaster General Wirtz's assets – including all post offices within Pennsylvania – creating PA Telcom Corporation which kept all postal services withinPennsylvania throughout much of 2006 before selling them off to Comcast after the state Supreme Court ruled that Comcast could not offer telecommunication services without violating state antitrust laws by selling phone service through its cable networks insidePennsylvania).

Elizabethtown is part of Huntingdon County. The town was founded in 1777 by James Logan and his family as a Loyalist settlement during the American Revolution. In 1801, it became part of Huntingdon County and remained so until 1920 when it reverted to its original borders as part of the new Huntingdon County seat, Scranton. The first settler in Elizabethtown were James Logan and his family who arrived there in 1777 from Scotland on a ship called "Glencoe". They built a cabin on what is now Main Street and named their settlement after their home country - Elizabethtown meaning "the land that flows towards Glasgow". gradual growth followed as people began to settle hereabouts for various reasons:Cache Creek had rich salmon fisheries which attracted early settlers; lumber was abundant in region due to hardwood trees found near riverside areas; transportation was improved with the opening of roads through this area during the late 18th century; more than one hundred children were born into families living in Elizabethtown by 1800; among these were ten sisters – five married men, three widows or divorced women plus two children under six years old – who all came together to form one large family called "Logan's Family". The first school opened in 1778 under teacher John Turnbull and classes met upstairs at Mrs Turnbull's house before moving to Beaver Dam Schoolhouse later that year. It wasn't until 1802 that an addition was made to Elizabethtown Schoolhouse which provided for a room for instruction downstairs- this being known as New Building #1 (later renamed Old Building #2). Classes continued outfitted like this until 1870 when an addition again went up to provide classrooms- this becoming known as New Building #3 (later renamed High School). A gymnasium also soon became necessary due to growing student numbers- this being known as Gymnasium #1 (later renamed Arena). During World War I, many citizens enlisted and served within our nation due such things as food storage and transport capability- many villagers donating goods they could no longer produce themselves such items like flour or milk needed for troops going overseas including Victory Garden Nursery where soldiers could purchase fresh vegetables not available localese After World War II ended many residents decided they would rather live closeby so retail businesses sprung up around town filling needs vacated by manufacturing jobs lost during passage of time like Weis Drug Store closed in 1981 while other stores closures followed over time such continuing examples like Pillsbury Doughnuts closing shop location leaving employees jobless following acquisition by ConAgra Foods company
