The early 1800s were a time of great change for the small town of Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. The area was first settled in 1753 by the Susquehanna River settlers. By 1810, Elizabethtown had a population of just over 100 people. However, during the mid-19th century, things changed dramatically for the community as it began to experience rapid growth. In 1854, the first steamboat made its way up the Susquehanna River and into Elizabethtown. This new technology allowed for increased trade and commerce in the small town. By 1865,Elizabethtown had reached its peak with a population of over 300 people. However, during World War II, Elizabethtown saw an increase in traffic due to its strategic location on Route 66. Despite all this growth and progress, however, by 1965Elizabethtown’s population had decreased to just over 50 people. In 2000, however, after many years of hard work by developers and residents alike, Elizabethtown experienced another boom period as its population surged past 700 people! Elizabethtown was founded in 1753 by Col. Robert Penn and his wife, Elizabeth. The town served as the capital of Pennsylvania from 1768 to 1795. In 1801, it became the seat of government for the newly created Cumberland County. The Penn family moved to Lancaster in 1814, and Elizabethtown lost its status as a capital until 1827. The town experienced heavy industry during the late 19th century; coalmining and manufacturing were two of the most important industries hereabouts. However, with the decline of these industries in the early 21st century,Elizabethtown has seen a resurgence in its economy as it begins to attract new businesses and residents. Its downtown area is home to several restaurants, bars, and other cultural attractions that offer an interesting mix of Americana and European lifebloods. In recent years, Elizabethtown has also become known for its annual Elizabethfest celebration which features music, artemisia wine tastings/marketing events, food & beverage sales (including local breweries),and more.
In 1792, the town of Elizabethtown was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants. The first courthouse in the town was built in 1809. In 1832, the town's first school was opened and it is still in use today. In 1865, the town became a borough and in 1907, it became a city.
