Elizabethtown is a small town in Buchanan County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Buchanan County. The name " Elizabethtown" is derived from English settlers named Elizabeth who arrived in 1736 and were followed by other families over time. The town was founded in 1768 by James Kirkpatrick and others as a trading post on the Susquehanna River. That year, it became the county seat of Buchanan County after its inclusion within that county from Cumberland County. The first courthouse was built in 1769 and saw use until 1829 when a new courthouse was erected and dedicated. In 1881, the townsite of Elizabethtown and adjoining land were surveyed to become what is now known as Elizabethton Township. The first school opened in 1768 on land donated by James Kirkpatrick near present-day Elizabethtown High School; it closed in 1827 because of budget cuts made by then-Governor John Adams. The first public school building was constructed on present-day Main Street in 1870 (the original structure still stands). For many years, it served as the only school in town; however, starting around 1924 heavy growth led to increasingly inadequate classrooms and later an inability to keep up with demand for services such as water main replacement or repairs to roads necessary for increased traffic levels. In 1969, the last high school students graduated from local schools before graduating onto college campuses all across America; subsequently, since then most residents have attended local colleges or universities which provides jobs throughout town during term times while residents attend classes outside of town whilestill paying taxes to their respective counties/states/etc... Elizabethtown is a small town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 997 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The name "Elizabethtown" is derived from Elizabeth and Townsend, two early settlers of the area. The first permanent settler in what is now Elizabethtown was James Caldwell, who arrived in 1779. He built a log cabin on the west side of the Susquehanna River near what is now Elkmont Road. In 1781, he married Sarah Greenough and they started to farm around what is now Elizabethtown. Many other early settlers came to this area including John Dickinson (1735-1812), Peter Carrick (1753-1814), George Washington (1743-1826), and Alexander Hamilton (1755-1804). In 1824, George Brown established a ferry service across the Susquehanna River from Elizabethtown to Cumberland Township for passengers travelling between that township and elsewhere in Butler County. This service continued until 1838 when it was replaced by a stagecoach line running directly from Erie to Pittsburgh via Greensburg and York City. The first school inElizabethtown was built in 1824 by Mrs Catharine Rankin as an academy for local children underprivileged by their parents or unable to attend better schools due to lack of money or location. Classes were held on Fridays morning until about 1830 when horse drawn wagons became available for transportation which allowed for more classes throughout the day; however, tuition rates remained high for this type of education which helped support many families during these times of economic hardship. This earliest form of schooling did not last long though as by 1830 there were already six schools open providing basic teaching with no formal curriculum; these schools included: Mrs Rankin's Academy; School #1; School #2; Springettsbury Female Academy; Montrose Male Academy; and Whitehall Female Academy which date back to 1831-32 alone! In 1840s three additional schools were opened: First Presbyterian Church School - opened February 1st 1840 - became part of Stroudsburg public Schools in 1865 after merging with Presbyterian Ladies Institute (); Second Presbyterian Church School – open October 15th 1840 - also became part of Stroudsburg public Schools ; Third Presbyterian Church School –opened March 3rd 1850 - also became part of Stroudsburg public Schools . These new schools quickly outgrew Mrs Rankin's original building so she sold it in 1851 to Mr James Halloran who operated it as an academy until his death in 1862.; thenceforth it functioned as a normal school until 1903 when it closed its doors permanently because Of signal danger from fire caused by lack OF smoke detectors (). It reopened again briefly 1945 before closing again permanently once again due TO lack OF funds AGAIN !! In 1903 both First Presbyterian Church & Second Presbyterial Churches had their facades rebuilt following damage done over time from weather conditions etc but both buildings still do not have proper windows anymore & are basically one large story ! In 1954 Third PresbyterianChurch reopened successfully finally getting all proper windows installed (& making much needed repairs) but unfortunately soon closed again due mainly to lack some funding yet AGAIN !! However finally starting around 1988/89 someone began renovating Third PresbyterianChurch property & has been slowly working on restoring all formerfacades (& has made significant additions) since then !! Finally effective May 6th 2009 all 3Original churches reopening fulltime (& making much needed repairs)!!!
