This innovation led to rapid growth in the area during the 18th century as other towns discovered how efficient this type of economy could be. By 1800, Elizabethtown had become one of Pennsylvania’s most important trading posts with significant exports coming into the state from neighboring Maryland Heights and Westmoreland counties. Unfortunately, this prosperity came at a cost; many residents lost their jobs when factories moved into town or when transportation improved which eliminated traditional sources of income such as agriculture
In 1759, the area that is now Elizabethtown was part of the Huntingdon County tract. In 1800, it became part of York County. In 1801, it became a town. It was organized as a borough on April 12, 1854. On July 1, 1907, it merged with nearby Monroeville to form the current city of Elizabethtown.
