Elizabethtown is a town in Butler County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1792 by John Herrick and his wife Elizabeth. On May 25, 1868, during the American Civil War The Battle of Gettysburg took place on July 2nd near present-day Yorkville in Union Township in what is now Chambersburg Borough within Butler County; it was fought between Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee and Union troops commanded by General Ulysses S. Grant . Elizabethtown had been garrisoned as a military post by Union troops since before battle began but surrendered without fight on July 2nd after being surrounded for several hours; over 1/3 million men were killed or wounded during this conflict which lasted three days and ended with an overwhelming Confederate victory .
